

Mr. Martin attended school in Temple and received his GED in 1965 so he could enlist in the United States Navy. He served in Vietnam and in the Philippines. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, and the Presidential Unit Citation.
Johnny got out of the Navy in 1967, and pursued a career with Santa Fe Railroad. Upon his retirement from the Railroad, he started a very active career in construction. He won best floor plan in the Parade of Homes many times, and was a very reputable builder.
He loved his dogs, classic cars, hot rods and motorcycling. He was a member of the NRA, Good Guys and the Hot Rod Association. He had many pets over the years including Squirt, and Sissy, the cat with no tail and his favorite, Gracie. His favorite vacation destination was Colorado. He became good friends with Gary Gosney, Ronald White, Jack Hilliard, Melvin “Muggs” Smith and Tip Baxter.
Mr. Martin married Rebecca Maurine Elliott on February 5, 1969 in Mexia, Texas. They had one son, Brent Elliott Martin.
Johnny is survived by his wife, Rebecca, Son, Brent and his wife, Kim, and three grandchildren, Ian, Kaylie and Katherine. He also has a great grandson on the way! Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny and Billye Jo Martin.
Services, with military honors, will be held at 1 pm at the First Church of the Nazarene, 5000 S. 31st Street in Temple on Saturday, April 23.
