Services for Stokes Monroe “Sam” Galloway will be 11am Saturday July 21, 2012 at Taylors Valley Baptist Church with a visitation from 10-11am at the Church. Mr. Galloway passed away at his home on July 16, 2012. He was born December 1, 1921 in Birmingham, Alabama, to James Galloway and Eula Mae Brown. He is survived by his loving wife Vernell, son Dr. Glenn Galloway, daughter Dr. Jeanne Galloway, grandson Midshipman Scott Galloway, sister, Agnes Marie, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers James (J.D.), William Earl, and Henry (Art).
Sam was raised in Birmingham and he enlisted in the Navy shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was a veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam. While stationed in Florida Sam met his future bride, Vernell Boatright. They married on November 16, 1955 in Jacksonville, FL at Avondale Baptist Church.
Sam served in the Navy over 20 years. He retired as a senior chief in 1966 and moved to Arizona that same year. In 1968 the family moved to Sierra Vista, AZ, their home for nearly 40 years. Sam worked for the Army in the civil service until 1984. In 2006 Sam and Vernell moved to Temple, Texas where they established a lovely home.
Over the years Sam could be found at the end of a work day in his vegetable garden, in his garage, or “puttering around” his property. He was a "doer" and he always managed to find something useful to do with his time. Sam would often ask, “What’s the plan?” He always tried to have a plan to make the most of each new day.
