Beverly Jean Shahadey, 94, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 23, 2022, surrounded by her family. She was born on New Year's Day 1928 in Port Huron, Michigan, to Albert Rassie and Ruth Kresin Rassie. Beverly moved to Terre Haute during her childhood, where she worked in her father's market. Albert's second wife, Mabel Farah Rassie, became a second mother to Beverly. She gained the title of big sister when Judy was born.
She loved spending her summers in Michigan, where her birth mother resided. Beverly adored being outdoors, especially swimming. Reading was another favorite pastime. Graduating from Wiley High School in 1946, Beverly attended every high school reunion thereafter. She could strike up a conversation with anyone, never meeting a stranger.
She married her sweetheart, Mike F. Shahadey, on June 5, 1949. (Before Mike's mother passed away in 1946, Mary Joe instructed her son, "Marry the daughter of Albert Rassie.") Beverly was a loyal wife to her loving husband, devoting 57 years to him in sickness and in health.
Together Mike and "Bev" owned Shahadey's Food Market, originally opened by Mike's father, Farris, a century ago in 1922. Alongside Mike's three sisters, Beverly ran the mom-and-pop establishment before retiring in 2004, while also being a homemaker. The store was known all over the Wabash Valley for Christmas candy and nuts.
Beverly's pride and joy was her family. She gave birth to two daughters, Mary Jo Tom and Marilyn Jo Farver. Her daughters provided her four grandchildren who, in turn, gave Beverly four great-grandchildren. Spending time with them was her definition of happiness.
She was a lifelong member of St. George Orthodox Church. Always willing to help, Beverly was an active part of the Ladies Society in her youth. Beverly is survived by her daughters, Mary Jo (Michael H.) Tom and Marilyn Farver; four grandchildren, Gina (Preston) Tom-White, Eric (Blair) Farver, Michael A. Tom, and Todd (Lindsay) Farver; four great-grandchilden, Giana White, Presley White, Peyton White, and Jackson Farver; sister, Judy Stadler; sister-in-law, Linda Shahadey; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Mabel Rassie; husband, Mike F. Shahadey; son-in-law, Jack Farver; five brothers-in-law, James Farah, Albert Mareena, Frank Shahadey, Charles Shahadey, Sr., and Henry Stadler III; and seven sisters-in-law, Corrine "Kreme" Mareena, Rose Farah, Alice "Marie" Shahadey, Nora Shahadey, Sarah Shahadey, Louise Shahadey, and Helen Shahadey.
In keeping with the family's wishes, services are private.
If so desired, memorial contributions may be directed to St. George Orthodox Church, 1900 S 4th St, Terre Haute, IN 47802. The family wants to thank Beverly's caregivers, Aislyn, Holly, and Molly, for their love and support in preserving her quality of life. We love you... "a bushel and a peck."
