

George Hines, 80, of Terre Haute, IN, passed away with his family by his side at Union Hospital on December 10, 2013. He was born in Terre Haute on March 4, 1933, to John J. Hines Sr. and Catherine Cagle Hines.
George was a life time member of The Marine Corps League, V.F.W. and the Emmaus Community. He was a Member of Mt. Pleasant Church and very active in The Upward Sports Program at Mt Pleasant Church. He was also a founding member of The Terre Town Little League Baseball Organization. George was a 1951 graduate of Gerstmeyer Tech. George then volunteered for service in the US Marines during the Korean War. He served as a member of "Baker Bandits" Company B, 1st Battalion 5th Marines. He fought in several engagements, with his last being the March 1953 Battle of Nevada Cities, at Outpost Bunker Hill. There (then) PFC Hines was severely wounded. He was a disabled veteran. George retired after 32 years at Columbia House as distribution manager in 1990. Since then, he served as a Commissioner of the City of Terre Haute Police Merit Board. He was board President at the time of his death.
George is survived by his wife of 54 years Jean (Stevens), an Uncle, Anthony Hines and wife Kay of Kenosha, WI, a brother John J. Hines Jr. and wife Betty of Joliet, IL, sons: Robert J. Hines and wife Tracy of Terre Haute, Michael L. Hines and wife Vicki of Wichita, KS, Patrick J. Hines and wife Barbara of Colorado Springs, CO, John C. Hines and wife Amy of Terre Haute, IN, a niece Debra Umbaugh of New Lennox, IL, and a nephew James Hines of Joliet, IL. Grandchildren: Mathew Zehner and wife Andrea of Paris, IL, Jennifer Ferguson, and husband Kenneth of Indianapolis, IN, Curtis Zehner and wife Kelsey of Terre Haute, IN, Shawn Hines and wife Cassandra of Bloomington, IN, Lora Cox and husband Nathan of Haven, KS., Catherine Gach and Husband Kyle of Georgetown, D.C., Patrick Hines of Wichita, KS., Marcus Miller of New River, NC, Samantha Hines of Delton, MI, Rachel Miller of Fort Collins, CO, Matt Miller of Colorado Springs, CO, and Nicholas Hines of Terre Haute, IN. George had 6 great-grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his parents John and Catherine, and his first grandson Jacob Hines.
Services will be Friday at 1 PM at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home with a visitation Thursday from 4-8 PM at the funeral home. Officiating will be Pastor Aaron Wheaton with burial at Roselawn Memorial Park.
