James was born to Fredrick and Dolas Wilkes in March of 1960 in Terre Haute. He went on to attend and graduated from North Vigo High School. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army where he served as part of the Military Police and was an expert rifleman.
Following his military service, James worked as a truck driver for many years. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson, fishing, watching the Steelers, and most importantly, spending time with his granddaughters.
James is survived by his life-long significant other Tarri Render; son William Wilkes; step-daughter Jennifer Render; granddaughters Mahlan, Kaitlinn, and Ella; great-granddaughters Stella and Kinsley; sister Trudy Anderson (Jimmy); and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents Frederick Wilkes and Dolas (Bates) Wilkes, and brothers Mark Snider and Donny Wilkes.
