

John (Jack) H. Dwyer, 85, of Terre Haute, passed away on September 23, 2011 at Union Hospital. He was born on May 5, 1926, in Terre Haute to Daniel J. and Bertha U. (Ward) Dwyer. Jack was a graduate of Gerstmeyer High School. He Served in the United States Navy during WWII on board the USS Houston in the South Pacific and the USS Providence in the Mediterranean and Europe. After serving his country, Jack graduated from Brown’s Business College and attended ISU Business College. He retired from Spence-Banks Oil Company as operations manager after spending 35 years in the trucking industry, working for Merchants Freight System, Lovelace Truck Service, Best Way, commercial of Indiana, Orschaln Brothers, and Maislin Transportation Company.
Jack was a past president of the Indiana Accounting and Finance Council IMTA, past president of Terre Haute Motor Carriers Association, First Vice President and on the Board of Directors of the Transportation Club of Terre Haute, Honorary Life Member and past secretary of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Terre Haute Elks Lodge #86, life member of VFW Post 972, member of American Legion Post 104 and a member of the Sycamore Country Club.
In his younger years, Jack was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He enjoyed several years of golf and bowling, and the fellowship of the many members of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, American Legion, and the VFW.
Jack is survived by his second wife, Dorothy M. (Walton) Dwyer, two daughters, Marilyn S. Shilkett and her husband Ed, and Jane A. Jacobs and her husband Steven; three step-sons, Milford Ward, David Ward and his wife Vickie, Steve Walton and his wife, Emily, two step-daughters, Beth Wilkey and Peggy Thompson and her husband Joe, five grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Barbara, a daughter Diana L. Dwyer, a son, Jack R. Dwyer, a granddaughter, Catherine M. Dwyer Rogers, and two sisters, Frances M. Walls and Margaret L. Ackerman.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 25 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home. Terre Haute Elks Lodge #86 will be performing rites at 7:30 pm. A funeral ceremony will be held on Monday, September 26 at 11:30 am at the funeral home with Father Joel Burget officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park with military rites performed by VFW Post 972.
