

Marjorie Grace North Loving, 97, of Terre Haute, departed her earthly life and joined her beloved husband Ira and daughter Mary Elizabeth in eternal Heavenly rest on Friday, December 12, 2014. She was born on January 27, 1917, in Terre Haute, to the late Alfred W. and Ethel (Collinson) North, the eldest of three children. She was also preceded in death by her sister Winnifred Brammer and brother William North.
Marjorie is survived by her daughter, Judith Irene Brewer and husband Max of Rantoul, IL; her son, John Howard Loving and wife Maria of Terre Haute; son-in-law Glen C. Salmon, Jr. of Rosedale. Also surviving are nine grandchildren: Stephen (Carol) Highsmith, Scott A. Johansen Sr., Beth (Emmett) Lynch, Julia (Rich) Spencer, Jessica (Ray) Pruitt, Heather (Scott) Templeton, John Benjamin (Abbie) Loving, Justin Brewer, and Christina Brewer; sixteen great-grandchildren, and many treasured nieces and nephews.
At age three, Marjorie set sail on the Queen Mary with her Auntie Kate. They traveled to England where she spent three years with her aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Marjorie graduated from Garfield High School in 1934 and from the Union Hospital School of Nursing in 1938. She married Ira Loving on July 21, 1940 at Maple Avenue Church. She began her career working for Dr. William Baldridge and for hospitals where she and Ira were stationed during Ira’s service in the Army Air Corps. Marjorie left the workforce to raise her family and then returned to her nursing career at Meadows Manor East. She was chosen to be the first administrator when Meadows Manor North opened.
Marjorie was an active lifetime member of Maple Avenue United Methodist Church. She was gifted with a beautiful singing voice and used her gift as a member of the church’s Chancel Choir. She was invited to sing at many weddings. Marjorie was a member of the Wesleyan Service Guild and Circle at Maple Avenue UMC. She was a 50 year member of the Florence Nightingales. When her children were young, Marjorie was an active member of the Parent/Teacher Association and served as a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout Den Mother. She was affectionately known as “Doc” at Brownie Camp at McCormick’s Creek and Camp Na Wa Kwa.
Marjorie was a devoted mother to her three children. She raised them well and shared an appreciation of the arts and music. She was a wonderful storyteller, delighting her children at bedtime with stories from her own childhood. Marjorie led a long and happy life that was centered on her family. She was caring and young at heart. She will be greatly missed.
Marjorie’s family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Cannon Inn and Hospice of the Wabash Valley for the love and compassion that they showed during her final days.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 16 at Thomas Funeral Home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 17 at the funeral home, with Pastor David Rockhill officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Maple Avenue UMC, the activity fund at Cannon Inn, or Hospice of the Wabash Valley/VNA.
