Virginia Elizabeth Harris

BRAZIL — Virginia Elizabeth (Merritt) Harris, 92, of Brazil, passed away on Friday, Oct. 9, 2015, at her home with her family by her side. Virginia was born Aug. 9, 1923, in Vigo County, the daughter of the late William S. Merritt and Stella E. (Fields) Merritt. She married the love of her life, Carroll C. Harris, on Dec. 7, 1941. He passed away on May 13, 2000.

As a young lady she worked at Commercial Solvents. After the birth of her children, she was fortunate enough to be a stay at home mother. Once they grew up, she worked at Meadows Elementary School in food service and for Vigo County School Corporation until her retirement in 1983. Virginia enjoyed working outside. She was a member of Ebenezer Church.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Elizabeth “Liz” Withers; and a grandson, Jerry Harris. Virginia is survived by her children, Janet Wood (Chris), Ronald Harris (Elizabeth), Lloyd Harris (Leslie) and Robert Harris (Valerie); son-in-law, Jack Withers; grandchildren, Rhonda Cooper (Eric), Tracie Chase, Eric Robertson, Rita Melbourn (Mark), Robin Camp (Jim), Jeff Smithhart (Lori), Jody Barksdale (Allison), Dale Harris (Tuesday) and Mike Harris; 11 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; as well as extended family and friends.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct.14, 2015, at French Funeral Home, 421 E. National Ave., in Brazil. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Bill Price officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery. Share a note of condolence at:
