Walter Vitus Dollinger, 74, of Terre Haute, passed away on his birthday, August 18, 2013, surrounded by his family at Cobblestone Crossings Health Campus. He was born on August 18, 1939, in Ickelheim, Germany to Vitus and Anna (Miller) Dollinger. Walter grew up in Germany and received training as a baker, a skill that he brought with him when he moved to the United States. He owned and operated Walter’s Bakery in Downtown Terre Haute from 1973 until the early 80’s. In his spare time, when he wasn’t baking something spectacular to share with family and friends, Walter enjoyed gardening, playing euchre with friends in Fontanet, and bowling on a league. He loved to go swimming with his grandchildren. Walter was also an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Pacers fan. Most of all, he cherished the time he spent with his family.
Walter is survived by his wife of almost 12 years, Mary Ann (Bahus) Dollinger of Terre Haute; daughters Doreen Bahus and Claudine Dollinger-Hann, both of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Elijah Hann, Adam Bahus, and Zachary Bahus, all of Terre Haute; brother-in-laws Scott Bahus and John Bahus, both of Terre Haute; a sister-in-law Lenora (Don) Bowlby of Greencastle; special nephews Aaron Bahus, Michael and Mark Dollinger; sisters Gerta Carmen and Helen Nestler, both of Indianapolis; brothers Heinz Dollinger and Siegfried Borczak both of Indianapolis; and several other nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Erwin Dollinger.
Per Walter’s wishes, cremation was chosen. A Gathering of Family and Friends will take place from 4 until 7 on Friday, August 23 at Walter’s home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association or the charity of the donor’s choice. Mattox-Wood Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
