William Charles Appleford, fondly known as “Wild Bill” passed away peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2015 with his twin sister Betty and sister Barb by his side. He was born on September 21, 1949, in Syracuse, NY to William R. and Margaret R. (Gormley) Appleford. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Suzanne Slattery.
Wild Bill served in the United States Army and served in Vietnam. He was a member of Joseph A. Bray Marine Corps League Detachment 471, a lifetime member of Lawton Byrum VFW Post 972, a member of the 40 & 8, a member of Amvets Post 61, past member of Rosedale American Legion Post 290, the American Legion Riders, and a member of Krietenstein American Legion Post 104. Wild Bill liked nothing better than hanging out with his loyal canine companion, Shady, who he doted on for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his “brothers” and “sisters” and riding into the wind on his Harley.
Bill is survived by his sister Barb Williams and husband Bob of San Diego, CA; his twin sister, Betty Dasher and husband Allen of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by ten nieces and nephews and 17 great-nieces and great-nephews who loved him very much. He also leaves to remember him fondly: his many friends that are too numerous to count.
Visitation will be held from 11 to 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 1 at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, at the funeral home with military honors provided by American Legion Post 104. A Celebration of Wild Bill’s life will be held immediately following at Krietenstein American Legion Post 104 with a motorcycle procession escorting his family from the funeral home to the post.
