Wilma Armstrong, 104, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 23, 2015, at St. Anthony Park Home in St. Paul, Minn. She was born in Terre Haute, Ind., and lived nearly her entire life within six blocks of her childhood home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rose and Bert Kittle; and by her six siblings, Inez Ogden, Farol Phillips, Gordon Kittle, Mildred Chambers, Elizabeth (Betty) Evans and Marian Kittle. Wilma is survived by her daughter, Susan Armstrong of White Bear Lake, Minn.; nephews, Ken Phillips and Robert Chambers; and nieces, Juanita Sudolcan and Mary (Sandy) Surber; as well as many grandnephews and grandnieces.
Wilma graduated from Garfield High School in 1929, and married Willard “Wig” Armstrong in 1930. They were divorced in 1951. Wilma worked at Crescent Industries and Unique Printing, and retired in 1973 after working for over 20 years for The Rueben H. Donnelley Corp.
After retirement, Wilma joined the Service League at Union Hospital, where she was a volunteer for over 30 years in X-ray and the gift shop. She loved playing cards with her poker ladies, traveling, visiting her daughter, walking daily to Collett Park, reading and doing crosswords.
She was a warm, caring, generous friend to many and a devoted daughter and sister. Wilma was a marvelous, fun-loving mother, always putting her daughter first to ensure Susan’s well-being and her college education. She was known for her ready laughter, easygoing nature and sense of humor ... always enjoying a good joke.
At age 98, Wilma moved to Minnesota to live with her daughter. In the last three years of her life, she received loving care from the staff at St. Anthony Park Home. Even as her health failed, she always maintained a positive attitude and a quick, warm smile.
A memorial service and burial will be at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 7500 N. Clinton Road, Terre Haute, on Thursday, June 25. Visitation will precede the memorial service at 10 a.m. Memorials to Wilma Armstrong may be made to the Union Hospital Foundation, 1606 N. Seventh St., Terre Haute, IN 47804.
