With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Judith Ann Townes (Judy), who was called home to be with the Lord on November 23, 2024, at the age of 67. Judy was born on February 23, 1957 in Texarkana, Arkansas to Bob and Geneva Bowen, and her unexpected departure has left a profound void in the hearts of her family and friends.
Judy’s love for her children, family and friends was unwavering and unconditional, a devotion she proved countless times through her selfless actions and generosity. She was a woman of steadfast faith in God, a gentle spirit, and a heart filled with boundless love. From a young age, her love for singing was evident, and it became one of her greatest passions. As a child, she began singing in church with her immediate family, and it was there that her love for music was nurtured. In late 1979, Judy had the privilege of sharing her gift with others as part of the Heaven Bound Singers, a southern gospel singing group which included her brother Bobby, her dad Bob, her friend Sheila Lynn, Robin Sams and Don Peek. They traveled the Ark-La-Tex spreading God’s word in song. Later, she became part of Impact, a trio with her sister Anita and again with friend Sheila Lynn, bringing joy and inspiration through their beautiful harmonies.
Judy was especially known for belting out the powerful choruses to “The Lighthouse” and “God Walks the Dark Hills,” songs that touched the hearts of all who heard her sing. Her voice was a reflection of her deep faith, and she carried that love for music throughout her life. We take comfort in knowing that Judy is now singing in the heavenly choir, reunited with her loved ones and friends who have gone before her, lifting praises to the Lord she loved so deeply.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Horace Dean (Dean-O) Townes; her father, Bob Bowen; and her sister, Kathy Page. Though she has left us too soon, we find comfort in the knowledge that she is at peace in the loving presence of our Heavenly Father, singing with the angels.
Judy is survived by her two sons, Brandon Sams and Aaron Sams of Texarkana, AR, and her cherished grandson, Layne Sams. She is also survived by her beloved mother, Geneva Bowen of Fort Worth, TX; one brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Becky Bowen of Greenbrier, TN; a sister and brother-in-law, Anita and David Minor of Fort Worth, TX; two sisters-in-law, Brenda Guthrie and Jimmie Caroline Suggett, both of Texarkana, AR; as well as a number of nieces, nephews, and extended family who will miss her dearly.
A Celebration of Life will be held at East Funeral Home’s downtown location at 602 Olive St., Texarkana, TX 75501, on December 14, 2024, at 2:00 PM. We invite all who knew Judy to join us as we honor her memory and celebrate the love and light she brought into our lives.
We take comfort in the words of John 11:25-26: Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die.” While our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we trust in the loving embrace of God, who holds Judy in His eternal care and offers us strength in this difficult time.
