Sandra “Sandy” May Wood, age 69, passed peacefully from this life, leaving behind a legacy of faith, creativity, laughter, and love. Born on February 14, 1956, she was a true Valentine’s Day gift to all who knew her—radiating warmth, compassion, and a joyful spirit throughout her life.
At 14, while attending the Rebekah Home for Girls in Corpus Christi, Sandy was saved and began her lifelong walk of faith. During that time, she joined The Honeybees Quartet, where her beautiful voice shone brightly as the group traveled across the country sharing their music and ministry. Music remained her sanctuary, her joy, and one of her greatest gifts.
A talented artist, Sandy expressed her creativity in many ways. Her artwork—murals, paintings, and mosaics—can be found in local establishments and homes, each piece reflecting her vibrant imagination and attention to detail. Her artistic eye extended beyond the canvas to the world around her.
As a member of First Baptist Church in DeKalb, Texas, where she worked for almost two decades, Sandy poured her heart into caring for the church grounds- planting flowers, shaping bushes, and tending to the grass with patience and love. Her creative touch left a lasting mark of beauty and grace throughout the church property.
Sandy’s love of nature and animals reflected her gentle soul. Whether rescuing stray creatures or showing kindness even to a snake crossing her path, she saw God’s handiwork in all living things. She adored working in her yard and garden long past dark, barefoot in the grass, tending to every flower and plant with care. Her boundless energy, quirky humor, and fearless embrace of life made her unforgettable. A true “cut up,” she loved to laugh and made sure everyone around her did too.
She is survived by her three beloved children: Chris Thomson and wife Angela; Shannon Thomson and husband Jeff Wright; and Lauren Wood and husband Angel Ortega. She also leaves behind two brothers, Roger May and Randy May, and her constant companion, her sweet dog, Taffy.
Sandy was preceded in death by her loving parents, William May and Rachel May Fowler.
Those who knew Sandy will remember her as a woman of deep faith, remarkable creativity, and endless love. Her laughter, music, and art will continue to echo in the hearts of those she touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that you share any stories, memories, or photos of Sandy by emailing them to [email protected] or mailing them to Shannon Thomson, 3424 Wood Street, Texarkana, TX 75503.
A celebration of Sandy’s life will be announced at a later date.
