We wish you were here today and every day, and especially April 19, even for just a little while so we could say Happy Birthday and see your funny and sweet smile! The only gifts today are those you left behind: The laughter, the joy, the happiness and all of the memories--the best kind! Today we all do our very best to try and find a happy place...struggling to hide heavy hearts and the tears that appear on our faces. Happy Birthday Conrad! We  are thinking of you. Miss your funny laugh, silly dance moves and fantastic stories! Keep ridin!

Cindy and Jeff...as you know, we keep a guarded watch over your broken hearts. Life changed so quickly five years ago and your loss is beyond comprehension. Conrad's name is spoken often in our Rupert/Piper/Keller households. Once, we feared all that came with saying his name...the utter dispair of such a loss, but steadfast in our day, we hold you up and will not let a day go by without a thought of Conrad, we honor him through loving things he loved....his car collection that Shane and Troy treasure, and they know exactly where the cars came from, how they came to watch over them; his sheer tallness has been passed onto Braeden and Camden and each still wears a shirt of Conrads and they have his love of music that echoes in their hearts, where you'll find his laughter, gentleness, silliness and love of everything from red tennis shoes, crazy socks and hunting, sports, friends and we honor Conrad by loving you.  None of us have walked away from Conrad...we all remember him, we speak his name, miss him very much, ache for you wishing we could pull you out of the darkness that found you...thru butterfly releases at various AFSP walks released in his honor, balloons at events that carry his name; his name is heard by hundreds, if not thousands, by survivors like you. We keep his picture in plain sight and we still cry too on days when we can't comfort you or when our hearts are overwhelmed with missing the stories of his funny escapades. You are strong beyond steel and you walk not alone. We have not left you, some days we let go just enough to let you breath and then we, Mike and me, Gretchen, Corey, Braeden, Canden, Erika, Kurt, Shane, Troy, Bob, Jennifer, Kevin, Tim, Marlene, wives, husbands, tennis team members and a community of people you have not met, yet they know too clearly your sadness, we enfold you again in our collective arms...sure you feel us with arms so tight you can barely breath.....and all remember Conrad, all love you, ALL remain steadfast in supporting you, and each one cries with you. Still. Conrad has not been forgotten nor will any of us allow that to happen, ever.  And we love YOU and we all need YOU. You matter to each of us. Not one of us can know the depth of your sorrow but everyone of us can remind you, we are still here for you, with you and beside you.

Today marks 5 years since our son, Conrad, passed away. One cannot explain the depth of sadness we endure daily, the constant reminder of what was and the heartbreak of what should be. 

Time has passed quickly for many yet, for us, seems to stand still for moments in time. We move forward daily finding ways to cope with a reality that is now a part of our lives. However, this great loss does not allow in the happiness we experienced as a family. There is still an extra chair at the table, an empty seat in the car, a birthday not celebrated, presents unopened, a last name that ends, and for those that knew Conrad well, they know, a very sad, unending silence; we just move forward.

We know had he not been consumed with such grief, at that moment in time, he would never have left us. Had he stopped for just a minute he would have rationalized the moment realizing when one door closes another opens. Unfortunately, the pain he was feeling in those final hours ran so deep he could not see the light through the blackness. 

To my sister and brother-in-law, Kim and Mike, thank you for taking so much on especially during the first year and for continuing to be our rock. You have traveled a very long, dark, bumpy road with us; for that we will be forever grateful. 

To our friends and my tennis sisters that stood by us in our time of darkness, listening in silence, always kind words, gifts, abundant prayers, and friendship; we thank you.

Lucky are we to have had a son with intelligence beyond his years, a caring soul always willing to help a friend or stranger, a happy, spirited outgoing young man with a laugh that brought a room together he made such a difference in so many lives. We love and miss him beyond words.

You have been gone four (4) years, four years, beyond belief! The days seem to just pass and the pain of your passing never seems to to be far from the surface. Those that say time will heal are all full of crap, it isn't true! There is no healing for a parent who has lost a child. I love and miss you Son and I hope you are doing well wherever you are now.

Hey Conrad; so a few of us were talking about you over the weekend/just wanted you to know we did not use your name in vain!  We miss you still as much as we did when all this came down.  Our hearts are still broken, still sad and still fight the tears daily.  BUT buddy, you keep that hand on your family cuz they need to know you are guiding them on this trail.  GOD WE MISS YOU.  Look down every now and then and give us a break...something that will let us know you are good.  See you one day and looking forward to it!

Just back from the annual trip to the Black Hills (Sturgis), my first trip in three years I should add. You were only 11 years old when you made your first trip to the Black Hills with me and until your death, we never missed a year together.....that seems like a million years ago now. This was always our "Guys Trip" together and it was really tough this year without you. Everywhere I looked I remembered things we did together or clowned around about or laughed about or we making our annual visit to the Burger King Drive Thru in Sturgis just so we could hear the lady taking our order say "You bet cha" in response to me thanking her for taking our order (Sorry Kid I couldn't bring myself to do that this year without you). This is my last trip to the Black Hills, I will leave our memories intact where they are forever. Love you Son and miss you more than you will ever know.

Three years and a life-time of what do we do next?  Life has changed, that is for sure.  What it is, is time to tell you is that you mattered; your life mattered, you mattered.  And we are slowly experiencing the gift that was you.  Your cousins share your love for wheels, for all that is mechanical and for music!  They each hold something in their souls that is YOU.  Braeden--his love for sports; Camden-his intense love for rock and hard rock music; Shane-a total car and build-it guy; Troy-his love for anything that goes around! We started to look for the signs that showed us YOU and we found them.  Thank you for making sure that we see them as it fills this side of the family with a smile each time we remark "That is so Conrad".  The pain, yes, it still hurts/the tears, yes, they still fall and sometimes the immense loss of you is so overwhelming that it's just easier to give into the ultimate sadness.  But then, like last weekend, a monarch butterfly will follow the big yellow butterfly with the busted up wing, and we know that you are trying to tell us it is okay to smile, it is okay to laugh and it is okay to live.  We miss you!  Thanks for keeping us in your wings.

Conrad, as your 28th birthday approaches, I know how very difficult this is for your friends and family waiting to see you again.  We hope you know that we are holding them up for you. I hope you can lay your hands down upon them and keep helping guide them through their pain.  There is not a day that goes by that your family here in Colorado does not say your name, smile at your picture or remember something you said or did....we just talked about the night you bit Gretchen at Grandma Faye's....no day passes without you in it and we continue to honor your memory and you.

Yesterday marked the two year anniversary of your going to be with God.....it has been a horribly difficult two years without you and never does a day go by that you are not in our hearts....we miss and love you buddy more than you can imagine!

I don't know the pain you have, although I have had a portion of pain.  I don't know how many tears are enough to cry.  I don't know how God heals our pain - I just know He healed mine.  I don't know why God lets things like this happen to wonderful people like you.  I do know God loves & cares for you.  He has promised us that.

One year ago today I lost my best guy friend, my road trip buddy, my golf partner, my confidant, my student of life ……. I lost you my Son. My heart is forever broken and I can only hope that wherever you may be you are safe and at peace.

On your birthday many checked your Facebook Page, many spoke your name one to another,  many cried alone,  many shared a tale or two,  many stopped beneath the shade tees among the butterflies someone placed there,  a few drove ny your house,  a couple stopped and chatted with those inside, everyone remembered your birthday, and all remembered you. I have seen so much of you lately. I know you are watching us all, and doing little things to show us that you are near. As your Birthday approaches I find myself looking through photos, reading old letters, and through sleepless nights I am still searching for ways to keep your memory alive. Your Mother, Sister and I stopped by your resting place today to wish you a Merry Christmas. During that visit it dawned on me that you were spending your first Christmas in Heaven. Rad - The days pass so slowly; each moment filled with memories of things we did together.  The smiles, the laughs, the tears; some days are unbearable and some just pass without emotion. I cannot explain the loss I feel to anyone as it is so deep and painful. I was and am still so proud of you, your many accomplishments, the love and support you shared with us and others.  I wait for the door to open to hear "what's up mom?" knowing that I will never hear your voice again yet that memory  helps me get me through the day. I remember growing up with Conrad through Jr. High and High School, he always made me laugh! I remember him riding his bike all the way from his house across the woodlands to come hang out with me when we werent able to drive yet. He also was big into cars, I remember him picking me up at my dads house in an old 70's corvet, we would speed through The Woodlands and laugh and have a good time. Its such a shame because I lost touch with him after I joined the Marine Corps, this is a lesson learned to stay in contact with your friends even if it might seem like a few months. I want his family to know how truly sorry I am for his passing. *Conrad you will be greatly missed*

You have been such a major part of my life and my very fabric since your birth and that will never change. I still find myself listening for you to say “Dad” and in my heart I know that will never happen again. Heavy heart, laden with pain and sadness at your passing.  Space that cannot be filled and pieces shattered of dreams, plans, relationships and life. This is life without you.   You have given so much to so many in your short lifetime.  Yes, you were as passionate as you were determined and you were as much an energy-filled little boy as you were a thoughtful, caring man.  I loved sitting in the horrible heat in Puerto Rico talking about how we would prefer to be out of the limelight rather reading a book alone, in silence, than to be in a group...nope, no one would believe that of either of us, but true! Enjoy the peace and quiet now, and each time you get that urge to pick up the pace, do it loudly so that when the thunder rolls, I will know you are having tearing up the streets of Heaven!  We miss you so much and love you more!

I'll never forget Desperado Junction 2011 and Conrad, the main instigator of the infamous Caper of the Jack Daniels Statue Ransom. May God grant you strength Jeff and Cindy. Love.

To The Nicklus Family, 
Please know that in your darkest moments many people will be holding you all up in prayer when perhaps you're not able to hold yourselves up. We will be among those praying for you all.

We never got to meet you Jeff and Cindy but we did have the pleasure of knowing Conrad. I loved his smile and his laugh. We will miss his "hola" as he walked into the house kicking off his shoes (if he had any on), he and Courtney making an ice cream run in the middle of the night and that smile. You will all be in our thoughts and prayers.

I had the honor of meeting the Nicklus boys a couple of years ago in Sturgis, thanks to our dog Emalee. The time spent with Conrad was always full of laughter and memories. Ex: him catching grasshoppers under their trailer to give to Emalee to play with. Conrad you will be deeply missed. Jeff and Cindy  Our prayers are with you. I am truly honored to have met Conrad and have the wonderful memories.

Conrad, your smile still burns in my mind when I think about answering the door, and seeing a tall person standing outside with a red hat. Your laughter was contagious, and your life here will be remembered always. I'm so glad that Chloe was up after bedtime just a few days ago, so she could give you that hug, and say goodnight to "her conrad". Thank you for allowing us to be apart of your life. We love you.

Jeff & Cindy - words cannot express the loss your feeling and I that I feel for you. Even though I only had a short time getting to know Conrad, he had a smile on him all the time and made me laugh....great kid. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family...take comfort in knowing that he is resting peacefully and you all are being comforted and thought of by so many friends and extended family.

Absolutely tragic and unexpected. I was in contact with him the weekend before he passed, I just wish I could have hung out with him and talked cars just one more time. I still haven't accepted this fact. Conrad was truly a unique person, very out going and was always a pleasure to be around. It is so painful to learn of this. I can not imagine the heartache experienced by his family members as Conrad was loved very much. My most sincere condolences go out to the Nicklus family and I wish them the best of health and will pray they find the strenght to cope with their loss.

Such a terrible tradegy, Conrad was too young to be gone so soon. Prayers to his family during this awful time. I hope the Lord helps to uplift some.

Connie, while we only had a few months together we moved on and became good friends over the past two years. I regret not being able to see you while I was in town last week and all the missed plans we had. I wish I had more time to make them up to you. You're such an amazing person and man, I hope you knew that. I literally can't stop thinking about you and your smile. That goofy side one you'd make when you thought I'd say something stupid or your sarcastic remarks about my girly watches. I miss you. Wish I would have seen you the other week.
