I miss you, Davie.  I was only 16 when my sister met "Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome."  After you and Dana got married you were never my brother-in-law ... you have always been my big brother.  Thank you for taking care of Dana for 45+ years ... for being the example as to what a man, a husband, a father, and a grandfather should aspire to be:  loving, fun, caring, understanding, encouraging, fair, interesting and interested -- did I say hilarious?  All of those characteristics live on in Ben, Tammy, Tyler, and your grandkids.  Thank you for teaching me to drive, for encouraging me in school, for being a good listener and also giving such good advice, for making Kyle and Kelly howl at "Uncle Dave jokes."  Up until the very end, you never lost your sense of humor, your fight, your strength.  You continued to inspire and always think of others. I love you so much, Davie. Dave always brought a sense of humor and a sense of energy as well as skill during our working times together at Shell. He understood deeply both the craft and the art of his interactions with reporters, community leaders and residents, and fellow employees. I remember talking with him several times during a particular crisis, and I always came away knowing he had everything under control. I admired him even more when he retired for sharing his passion, talents, and knowledge through teaching, then through writing. I could feel him in those books. My deepest sympathies to Dana and their children and family. The world has lost a great and good man.

High school classmate, Dave was soft spoken, yet outgoing.  Quite an accomplished and fulfilled life he had.   Condolences to the family.

Dave, my fellow Beaver and good friend.  I have enjoyed working with, reading your books and following your brave fight.  Rest in peace my friend.

Thank you for being you.  You have been a God send to me over the last 17 years and I am so incredibly sad that we will not be growing even older and rounder together.  We have bonded over so many things over the years from chili cheese dogs covered with Fritos, love for Thanksgiving food, and rooting for our Houston Cougars even when they were lousy.  

The feeling of going to your In-Laws house and looking forward to it as you are just hanging out with your friends is a feeling, I wish I could bottle and market to the world.  I would be a very rich man as that feeling is priceless and I promise I have never taken that for granted.  

Every day we will live in your honor and hopefully continue to make you proud. I will see you again and when I do save me a barstool bellied up to the bar as we will have a lot to catch up on.  

I know you’ll be watching over us all.

“THE DAVE I KNEW”

The Dave I knew was a very special man. He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather an d friend to many close associates. He was a man of many talents who was dedicated to achieving excellence throughout his life. Without question he was highly successful in many of his endeavors, both professionally and personally.

The Dave I knew was exceptionally smart, witty, full of life and a pleasure to be associated with. He had a superb work ethic which benefited him throughout his career, Dave was at his best when dealing with crisis events and represented his company in an honest and straightforward manner. His integrity was beyond reproach.

I first met Dave in 1983 after being transferred to Illinois from Houston. Over the next 38 years we became close friends and confidants. We developed a mutual respect for each other and supported each other through challenging experiences. The Dave I knew had a delightful sense of humor and a contagious laugh. He also had a charming way to disagree, simply uttering the word “huh” 

The Dave I knew was an outstanding photographer, journalist, writer and strategic thinker. He was an amazing communicator, teacher, coach and mentor. He was compassionate, hard working and loyal to those he cared about. It’s difficult to reflect back eight short years ago when Dave and I along with our wives celebrated his 60th birthday in New Orleans. What a wonderful time we had. Clearly time has a way of slipping away.

The Dave I Knew was a highly valued and much admired friend. He was someone I looked up to and came to love like a brother. I will miss him dearly. So long Brother Dave.

Oh Dave! To us you were a good neighbor that blossomed into friend and the ultimate, family! We loved watching you ride off on the weekends on your Harley. A little jealous you could go so often while our bike was parked in the garage.  A man of wit and integrity was the man we respected.  Thank you for the wonderful family you    shared with us.  You will be in our hearts forever.


Dave and I have been friends since the 9th grade. There were about 5 of us in high school that seemed to have fun getting in trouble with and always hung around together.  I always thought Dave was the leader because of his unmatched wit and humor and we became best friends.  Dave then went to Oregon State and I went to Washington State but we always got together during vacations in Longview. One summer we visited his grandparents in Skamania County along the Columbia River.  He drove his ’69 Chevelle SS and we stopped at the Skamania General and Antique store to buy beer.  At the antique section of the store Dave bought a police beacon and I got a medieval metal knights helmet with holes in it for eyes. Dave put the beacon on top of the Chevelle and would turn it on to slow people down on Highway 14 when driving by and then I would come out with the helmet on and scared them back on the road.  We have always stayed in touch throughout the years and shared both good news and bad news even to the last day. I have always referred to Dave as my best friend.  After I read his obituary I told Tammy that I really feel small.  I am one of many that will greatly miss Dave.

On behalf of the members of the Deer Park Community Advisory Council, I want to express sympathy to Dave's family on a death that came much too soon.  Dave was actively involved as a Shell representative to this community-industry forum for many years.  He understood the need for plants to communicate with the community, especially when a plant event occurs.  The improvements he helped make were appreciated.  Our hearts are with you at this difficult time.

I read your last text message to Carter and he read me your last message with him. We both smiled because we get to cherish these messages forever. 

You always made me feel welcomed and treated me so well. You asked about Madison and my parents often. Just the kind of man you were-asking about others. We could count on you for a listening ear and solid advice.

I struggle to put into words the relationship you had with my son.  I could always tell when Carter was on the phone with you by his laugh-I could hear it from the other room. Y’all were quite the duo! You were truly Carter’s biggest fan! Thank you for loving my son unconditionally. That’s 1 thing you did.. you made Carter feel comfortable in the young man he was growing up to be. I know there is a big piece of your soul in Carter-he will forever make you proud! 

You will be missed. Rest assure we will talk of you often and reminisce. Love you and see you soon.

Dave was a great friend and co worker to all of us at Shell oil. A cherished family member of our Deer Park Complex. He was easy to know and easier to like. He touched a lot of our lives. I enjoyed the many messages exchanged after he retired from Shell. A good man

He was a unbelievable photographer and writer.  I was in awe at his photography. 
His books were fun to read. I had him autograph two children books that he wrote. I knew they would be a treasure to me one day and they are. My grandchildren love for me to read them to them. 
Dave I will miss your funny sense of humor. 
I promise to always  be there for Dana and  your family.

It hasn’t even been a week since you left us. I feel like it will never be real that you are gone. I miss you so much everyday and my heart is filled with gratitude that I am your daughter. I am so proud of you and will hold your memory close all the days of my life. Thank you for being my rock- an unwavering, constant source of support and guidance. I can still hear you and know that you are watching over me. Telling me to stand tall and shine bright- give ‘em hell and lead with kindness. Your mom told you in one of your last phone calls that you will ‘always be her David’— well, you will always be my daddy. And I love you with my whole heart.
