Elizabeth Mae Alexander passed away on February 23, 2023 at the age of 84 years. She was an exceptional woman who will be remembered for her independence as well as her undying love and commitment to her family.
Liz was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 25, 1938 to her mother, Pearl Francis McTaggart. Throughout Liz’s childhood and into adulthood, her mother instilled in her the immense value of independence, a trait she was sure to pass down her family line.
Growing up in Chicago, Liz found a love for ice skating and could often be found skating on the frozen surface of Lake Michigan in the winter months. This was a passion she would continue to enjoy far into her life.
After moving to Houston, Texas, Liz graduated high school and entered the workforce as a legal secretary. Shortly after beginning her life as a young adult, she met Frederick George Weisbach. The couple married and provided a comfortable home for their children. Heidi Elizabeth was born in 1966 and Christian Alexander in 1968. Liz was always close to her family and provided them with an unconditional love that few will ever truly experience.
Nearing retirement, Liz decided that mastering one language was not enough and took up Spanish lessons. She would continue this pursuit all the way until her passing where she shared some Spanish words with her granddaughter while in the hospital. Liz also found a deep and profound connection to nature within her gardening. This was one of the places she felt most at peace. Regardless of the task, or the grueling Texas summer heat, she would always make the time to give her yard the attention she felt it deserved.
In 2000, Liz and Fritz separated. Still living in Houston, Liz made the effort to travel north to Montgomery for every family function imaginable. Now a grandparent, she was determined to be a part of her grandchildren’s lives. From dance recitals and choir concerts, to soccer games and stage plays, Liz was there for every single event.
Eventually, she decided to move closer to her family and purchased a home in The Woodlands where she lived for over 20 years. The house she chose had an absolute jungle in the backyard which Liz saw simply as a beast to tame. In time she transformed the jungle into her private garden sanctuary-a place that brought her much happiness. Whether she was working in her yard, reading a poetic novel or simply being wherever she needed to be to support her family, Liz was an incredibly strong, wise and cheerful spirit.
Liz is survived by her children Heidi Elizabeth Smith and husband David Ellis Smith; Christian Alexander Weisbach and wife Adriana Varon; niece Elizabeth Ann Williams; and grandchildren Allison Elizabeth Smith and Duncan Alexander Smith. Possibly the sweetest person to ever walk the face of the Earth, life will not be the same without her. We will miss her enthusiasm, strength, adventurism and gentle kindness. There is no way to summarize the immense impact of Elizabeth Mae Alexander.
A private family service will be held in April to celebrate Liz’s beautiful life.
