George H. Huff passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 19, 2025 into the loving arms of his heavenly Father after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease and dementia. True to his nature, he stayed determined and strong until the end.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Eleanor Nix Huff, his two daughters, Cindy Hunnicutt and Marcy Sosbee and his grandchildren Amanda and Jake Hunnicutt and Grady and Garrett Sosbee. George was a loving and selfless husband, father and grandfather.
George was born in Centreville, Mississippi on October 31, 1935 to Paul Huff and Lessie McCearley Huff. His parents moved to Hobbs, New Mexico where George spent his formative years. George attended Hobbs High School and went straight to work in the oil field as a roughneck when he graduated. It was out on an oil rig when he decided to go to college on the GI Bill. He spent three years in the army and chose to be a paratrooper his final year. He enjoyed his years in the service and carried this kind of discipline and work ethic with him for the rest of his life.
George began his college education in 1957 at West Georgia University in Carrollton, Georgia. During his time there he began courting Eleanor and they married on August 28, 1959 in Bremen, Georgia, where Eleanor grew up. He completed the last two years of his education at New Mexico Institution of Mining and Technology in Socorro, New Mexico, earning a degree in Petroleum Engineering with highest honors. Upon graduation in 1962, he accepted a job with Mobil Oil Company back in his hometown of Hobbs, New Mexico. He and Eleanor spent the next twenty years in Hobbs raising their daughters. George transferred to the Midland, Texas office of Mobil in 1980 and retired with Exxon Mobil in 1992. He worked for Mobil Oil Company his entire career and retired after thirty years of service. George held various positions within Mobil Oil, including Drilling Manager for the entire Permian Basin. He really enjoyed his work and all the friends he made along the way. He liked being out in the field as much as he liked being a Manager in the office. You could not out work him, nor could you match his commitment and fairness to his employees. He was a resilient man who always kept a sense of humor and humility.
After forty years in Midland, George and Eleanor moved to The Woodlands, Texas in 2021 to be close to Cindy and her family. He appreciated the new landscape full of tall pine trees and green as far as the eye could see. George lived out the last years of his life surrounded by family who loved him dearly and will miss him immensely.
A Graveside Service for George will be held Saturday, February 8, 2025 from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home & Cemetery, 18000 Interstate 45 S, The Woodlands, TX 77384.
