George Joseph Sheehan, 87, of Windsor Hills in The Woodlands, Texas passed away July 3rd, 2011. He was born February 22, 1924 on the corner of 33rd Street and 3rd Avenue in New York City, to the late Peter and Nancy Sheehan. He was raised in the borough of Queens in New York City before serving in the United States Army Corps of Engineers in both World War II and Korea. George is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Joan Sheehan, son Andrew, and daughter-in-law Andrea Sheehan, niece Sandra Hetzler, and numerous dear friends.
George and Joan were longtime residents of Queens before moving to Wayne, New Jersey in 1970 to raise their family. After Joan’s retirement in 1995 they moved to Naples, Florida to spend time with their childhood friends, before finally choosing to live in Windsor Hills the past ten years to be close to their son and his wife. George retired from the Police Department of the City of New York after being awarded a police academy scholarship to Manhattan College, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1968. He then began his second career in banking with Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company in Rockefeller Center, commuting daily from Wayne to New York City in the legendary Packanack Lake businessman’s carpool- parking spot #1 in the Radio City Music Hall parking garage.
George loved skiing, spending most winter weekends during the seventies, eighties and early nineties at the Hidden Valley Ski Resort and Club in New Jersey, and traveling annually to most of North Americas major ski resorts. George and Joan began renovating a farm house in upstate New York in 1951, near Glens Falls, and enjoyed many wonderful moments together in and around that area of the country. George was a member of the Packanack Lake Anglers Club for many years, where he enjoyed arranging, and especially participating in, numerous award dinners and holiday dances. His great passion when he was younger, besides big band dance music, was playing high-level amateur football, becoming an avid, although superstitious, fan of the New York Giants.
A memorial mass will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, July 12th at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 7801 Bay Branch Drive, The Woodlands, Texas 77382. A reception will immediately follow at the Windsor Hills Clubhouse, 1 East Windsor Hills, The Woodlands, Texas 77384.
