

Herbert J. Anders, age 69, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2023 in Houston, TX. He was born in Blue Island, Illinois, raised in Dolton, Illinois, and spent his professional life living in Illinois, Australia, England, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marsha (Wilson) Anders and his two sons, Robert J. (Nicole) Anders and Matthew J. (Megan) Anders. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Samantha, Julia, Timothy James (TJ), Mary, Kimble, and Rory. He is survived by his sister, Nancy Anders, along with his extended family including many cousins, in-laws and their families.
Herb was preceded in death in 2022 by his parents, Robert J. Anders, and Marilyn J. Anders.
Herb excelled at academics, graduating as valedictorian of the Thornridge High School Class of 1972, receiving his B.S. in Accounting from the University of Illinois in 1975 with Bronze Tablet recognition, and completing his Masters of Management from Northwestern University in 1977 on a full merit scholarship. Herb passed the Illinois CPA exam in 1977, receiving the Elijah Watt Sells Award, subsequently joining the accounting firm of Arthur Andersen, & Co. in Chicago, Illinois.
In 1988 Herb began his career at Waste Management, Inc. After three years in Chicago as Controller for their Environmental Monitoring Laboratory he was asked to move to Australia to be the Controller for Australia and New Zealand. Following four years in Australia, Herb and family moved to London, where he supervised special projects. Back in the U.S., his first year was spent working out of the Philadelphia office until being moved to the corporate headquarters in Chicago. When headquarters changed location, management persuaded Herb to transfer to what would become his new home in Houston. After 27 years of service, Herb retired as Vice President Operations Controller from Waste Management, Inc. in January, 2015 .
During his remaining years, Herb enjoyed visits from his grandchildren, and trips to the Chicago area to see his sons and their families. Herb also enjoyed many family gatherings with his parents, sister and numerous cousins and extended family & friends, in Crown Point, Indiana.
Herb’s greatest hobby, from the earliest days of home computing, was using the newest technology to build solutions that improved his daily life. He was also an avid reader, daily spending hours reading books, magazines, newspapers, etc. on his various devices. Even as his health was failing, he always kept his devices close at hand so he could stay connected to the world around him.
No services are immediately planned. A private memorial service for family and friends is expected in the spring in Crown Point, Indiana.
