Born on June 14, 1951 in Port Arthur, Texas, he was the son of the late Jack Edward Owen, Sr. and Hessie Reese Williams Owen.
Jack graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1973 and was a dedicated officer in the United States Marine Corps, serving with honor and distinction for 28 years. After serving as a field artillery officer, he attended Harvard Law School where he was Managing Editor of the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy. He served as Judge Advocate in the Marine Corps and then as an instructor in the Marine Corps Reserve. After retiring from active service, he practiced real estate law in Texas for 39 years. Professionally, Jack is remembered for his intellect and humor.
In 2008, Jack met Catherine through a dating site and drove from San Antonio to The Woodlands for their first date. When Catherine walked into the room, Jack said to himself, “Don’t mess this one up.” They were meant for each other and from that day forward they were as one. They loved spending their time together in Galveston, Aruba, Sedona or on one of their favorite road trips to a fun destination or just sharing a good book. Jack always joked that he was on probation for 16 years. Then, when they were in Galveston, sitting on the deck watching the waves, Catherine asked if he was ready to get off probation, and he immediately said yes. They were formally married on November 8, 2024, eleven years exactly after the date he proposed, even though they were married in their hearts from their first date.
Jack is survived by his spouse, Catherine L. Hawn and his two children: Sean R. Owen (Ambreen Rana) and MarrGwen O. Dickson, and Catherine’s son: Jonathan D. Hunnicutt (Adrienne) and his sister: Hessie O. Brawley.
Jack was a very special grandfather. He was “Granjie” to Mary Alison, Malone, and MarrGwen Dickson and “GranJack” to Aram and Asa Owen, and Joshua, Anya, and Isaac Hunnicutt. They will remember their grandfather for his generosity and unwavering support, attending their special events, reading books together, swimming, and adventures.
At Jack's request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. The family asks that you remember, share, and keep alive your best memories of Jack with your family. If you are so inclined, the family requests that you make a memorial donation to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (www.mdanderson.org).
