J.R. felt passionately about serving his community. He and Rena moved to Montgomery County in 1976 and have remained residents ever since. Upon moving to the area he was a grocery store manager for Safeway, which then led him to pursue purchasing Pitch’s Hardware and Garden Center. During this time he was elected as Mayor of Shenandoah, was a Crime Stoppers Advisory member, was a representative on the Town Center Improvement District, and helped form South Montgomery County Texas Road District #1. After selling Pitch’s Hardware, he became Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace, followed by becoming Montgomery County Tax Assessor Collector. He served in this position for 27 years before retiring in 2014.
During his years in office, some of his accomplishments included improved tax collection processes which resulted in substantial savings for the county and working with the state of Texas to pilot new programs. He also served as President of Tax Assessor Collector Association of Texas in 1998-99, and then later served as the Chairman of Education Committee TACA in 2012-14. J.R. was recognized and received multiple distinguished service awards for his accomplishments as Montgomery County Tax Assessor Collector.
It was through the purchase of the hardware store that he became an active member in Rotary Club of The Woodlands and The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce. He thoroughly enjoyed being an active member of both of these organizations. His Rotary Club accomplishments included: serving as President and Board of Directors, two Paul Harris Fellow Awards, two Presidential Citations, and establishing Interact Clubs for area youth. Among his accomplishments in the Chamber of Commerce, he received the Chamber Legacy Award in 2014.
