She was born in Houston, Texas on October 4, 1938. Linna Jean graduated from John H. Reagan High School in Houston in 1956. One of L.J.’s fondest memories included those of her membership in the John H. Reagan High School Redcoats from 1954-1956. She was a Drum Lieutenant for Company A. LJ., also, looked forward to the annual alumni luncheons for the Redcoats throughout the years.
Linna Jean was married to Royal A. Mackenzie, Jr. (R.A.) on June 28, 1958. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary before R.A. passed away in 2020.
She and R.A. raised two sons, Stephen and Kirk. While the boys were young, L.J. worked in the administrative offices of the schools the boys attended.
Linna Jean worked for the family optical business, Southern States Optical Company, owned by her husband, R.A. for many years.
L.J. so enjoyed the numerous “drives” she and R.A. would take through the Houston area and Texas admiring the foliage, bluebonnets, and attractions throughout their 62 years of marriage.
She treasured being “Maw Maw” to her three grandsons Matthew, Parker, and Jeffrey and her granddaughter Cassidy.
Linna Jean is preceded in death by her husband R.A, grandson Parker, nephew Justin Hurst, and parents Linna Bess & Era Homer Hurst.
She is survived by her son, Stephen & wife Anne, grandsons Matt & Jeff Mackenzie, son Kirk & wife Mai, granddaughter Cassidy Mackenzie, brother Allen & wife Pat Hurst from El Campo, and nephew Greg Hurst & wife Amy Dzur from Colorado, brothers & sisters-in-law Shirley & Don Nettle & Howard & Dorothy Mackenzie, niece Kat, nephews Brad, Jim, & Mark.
A private family memorial service is being held for Linna Jean on September 14, 2024.
The Mackenzie family would like to express our deep appreciation for all the prayers and well wishes that have been blessed upon us.
