From the time Jack was three years old, he was “double timing” and remained that way throughout life.
He left Center to serve in the military after being drafted. He was a very proud paratrooper-a member of the 82nd airborne. He was selected to be a member of the Army Honor Guard. One of his proudest moments was being reviewed by President Harry Truman at an appearance and the President stopped and looked at him as he was passing by the troops and said, “This is one of the best looking soldiers I have seen.”
After serving in the military, Jack came to Houston to go to the University of Houston. During that time, he worked several part time jobs including parking lot attendant and driving a bus. He went to work part time at a new bank in the Heights- Reagan State Bank and spent the next years until retirement. He rose from sweeping floors and filing checks to become Chairman and CEO. He retired at age 65 and decided to go back for another after 20 years in banking with another organization.
One of Jack’s great loves was his ranching operation in Leon County, Texas. He and Clara worked and managed a cattle operation for over 30 years on a part time basis. He loved to talk about his cows and pastures. They sold the ranch in 2013.
Jack was preceded in death by all his siblings.
