Allan was predeceased by his beloved wife Helen, in 2022. He often remarked that, “they dated for over 70 years”. Together, they shared a remarkable and enduring partnership.
He will be deeply missed by his children: Don (Elizabeth), Ruth (Bob Graham), and Diane (Taner Mahcupyan), his adored grandchildren: Allan (Alana), Patricia (Simon), Donald (Carine), Peter (Alicia), Heather, Alexandra, Sarah (Charlie), and Michael (Brenna) and his cherished great-grandchildren: Georgia, Ben, Theodore, Evan, Owen, and Malcolm. Allan will also be fondly remembered by his dear sister-in-law Ruth Gardiner and cousin Megan Wilson as well as many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family near and far.
He was predeceased by: his sister Anne (Norman) Wills, his brother Duncan (Patricia) Carswell, his sister-in-law Isabelle (Tom) Reid and his brother-in-law Paul Gardiner.
Allan was born in Toronto, proudly an “East Ender”. He attended Riverdale Collegiate before going on to the University of Toronto. His graduate studies took him to the Netherlands and his early career led him to Montreal. Ultimately a desire to be closer to family, along with an opportunity at York University, brought him back to Toronto.
Early in his career, while at RCA in Montreal, he built the first laser in Canada - an achievement that reflected both his innovation and technical vision. He continued Laser/LiDAR work for many years as a Professor in the Faculty of Science at York University, where he advanced his field while mentoring future generations of scientists.
In 1974, Allan founded Optech Incorporated as a spin-off from his research, extending the real-world impact of his work. Under his leadership, LiDAR technology was applied across a wide range of applications and industries. A particularly proud achievement was his collaboration with NASA on the development of the Canadian weather station aboard the 2007 Phoenix Mars lander. This work led to the first-ever observation of falling snow on Mars - an accomplishment that stands as a testament to Allan’s vision and impact on planetary science.
Allan was widely respected for his contributions as a physicist and researcher and received numerous honours recognizing both his impact and his service. These included appointment to the Order of Canada (CM) and the Order of Ontario (O.Ont), as well as fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada (FRSC).
Beyond his professional achievements, Allan found great joy in time spent with family and friends. Allan and Helen were generous hosts, famously welcoming up to 65 people for Christmas dinners. His country property, known simply as “the farm,” was at the heart of countless family gatherings and cherished memories. He loved boating along the waterways of southern Ontario. Travel was another great pleasure, often shared with large groups of extended family.
Allan believed deeply in giving back. Together with his wife Helen, he supported a wide range of organizations, including: the Alzheimer Society, Michael Garron Hospital, York University, WoodGreen and Community Music Schools of Toronto, among many others. Making a direct difference in people’s lives - especially through scholarships - was particularly meaningful to him.
He will be remembered for his integrity, his kindness and the deep love he had for his family. His legacy lives on not only through his work, but in the lives he touched, the values he instilled, and the generosity he showed throughout his life.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Maria Mabanes, who has been a loving caregiver for the past 14 years. Her devotion to both Helen and Allan, has been a precious gift. We also extend our sincere appreciation to: Karen, Steve, Ryan, Ricci and Annie for their wonderful care and support.
