Betty Eleanor Porter of Thornhill and the Belmont House, Toronto since 2016.
Betty was five months into her 101st year on Saturday, July 21st when she joined her
husband, Charles (Chuck) Porter who predeceased her in 1997.
Betty was born in Toronto to Marjorie and Clifford Hatton of Stirling, Ontario. She had
one sibling, a brother Bob. Both were schooled in Toronto. When her parents and Bob returned to Stirling, Betty moved into the Sherbourne Club for Ladies and continued her career as personal secretary to management at the Goodyear Factory Offices, Lakeshore Blvd West, Toronto.
Married life brought frequent moves as Chuck climbed the corporate ladder. They lived in
Windsor, London, Montreal and finally Toronto, establishing friendships and enjoying an
active social life, golf, curling and bridge. There were travels, summers at the cottage on Crowe Lake, Madoc and winters in Cocoa Beach, FL.
Betty was a dedicated member of the United Church of Canada and a willing volunteer.
She was a member of Toronto Ladies Golf Club and an accomplished golfer achieving a
“hole-in-one” twice!
Children of Family and friends provided much pleasure and lasting friendships. All helped
celebrate the 100th birthday party in February. Those of us who loved Betty and will miss her gentle nature are her niece Beverley Hatton Poste, Prince Edward County; son Greg, wife Kathleen Poste and their sons, Waterloo; Beverley’s daughter Penny Ford, FL and son Todd Poste TX. Long time friend, confidante, adviser and golf buddy Myrle Lewis will miss Betty.
A memorial service will be held at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home, 6150 Yonge St. (at Goulding, south of Steeles) on Saturday, July 28 at 2pm, with visitation from 1pm. If desired, donations to Thornhill United Church would be appreciated. Condolences www.rskane.ca
