It is with great sadness that the Martin family announce the passing of Doug on June 23, 2009 in his 84th year. He leaves behind his beloved wife Jean of 62 years. Cherished father of Carolyn, Beverley ( Michael Thompson), Susan (Alan Carson), and Paul (Kathy Harris). Proud grandfather of Elizabeth and Hilary Martin; Gregory, Stephen, Kathleen and Graham Thompson; Jeffrey, Allison, Heather, Laura and Ryan Carson; Jennifer and Stephanie Martin. Survived by his brother Harry Martin(Irene). He will be greatly missed by many nieces nephews and friends.
Doug's joy was people. He embraced his family and was never happier then when surrounded by them. He devoted a considerable part of his energy enhancing the lives of others, from his work as a counselor at the Donwood Institute to his numerous and significant gifts to St. Michael's Hospital. Doug's contributions to the hospital include equipment for minimally invasive surgery, funding for the research Cath lab, Toronto's first prostate robot, and gifts to the breast centre, heart and orthopedics, and most particularly the Martin Family Arthritis and Research Centre.
Doug had a unique gift for putting people at ease. A nervous guest amid strangers was quickly made to feel welcome and comfortable. Doug's thoughts were always of others. His memory will be cherished by all those who knew him, and most especially by those who knew and loved him best.
Friends may call at the R.S Kane Funeral Home (6150 Yonge Street at Goulding, south of Steeles Ave.) on Thursday June 25, 2009 from 2-4 & 7-9p.m. A service will be held at 1p.m. on Friday June 26, 2009 in the chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation to the St. Michael's Hospital Foundation.
