Grandpa,
We miss you. We miss your smile, your advice, your laugh, and your wisdom. From bringing us muffins by the dozen every time you came to visit to telling us your stories — we cherish every memory we have with you. You made sure we each knew that we were number 1, and that you were always so proud us. Give Grandma a hug for us. We love you.

The world lost one of the most inspiring, loving people!  You touched many lives and left an imprint in each and everyone of them.  Thanks for inviting me into your circle of grandchildren and telling me, "I had no choice but to call you grandpa!"  You will be missed dearly. I spent nearly 28 years of my life with the most incredible, hilarious, and loving grandfather anyone could ask for. While I have countless happy memories of time spent with my Grandma and Grandpa, a few in particular come to mind. 

One of my earliest is of an overnight stay my sister and I had at our Grandparents' during which we shared Swiss Chalet and visited Dave and Busters. I remember during this stay I had to work on homework that I was aggressively erasing at their dining room table. Grandpa caught me madly erasing my work, sat down next to me, and proceeded to teach me the exact method to erase pencil from paper effectively and efficiently - a lesson that lasted 
(in my mind) for at least 45 minutes to an hour. He patiently explained his reasoning, demonstrated the technique and gave me a chance to practice before explaining and demonstrating again. I left that visit feeling full of love and new found erasing skills - an experience that has stuck with me throughout the rest of my life. Not an erasing session goes by that I don't think about that day sitting at the table with my Grandpa.

On the day of my Grade 8 Graduation I remember Grandpa coming to the door, tipping his chauffeur hat and escorting me to the ceremony. He, of course, fully committed to his roll and acted professionally throughout our short drive. It was only when he pulled me in for a hug that he broke character and whispered that he loved me, was proud of me and that I (of course) was his number one. 

During my last FaceTime call with Grandpa he was on top form. He had a range of props within reach, excitedly showing off some of his prized possessions including his "best dad" teddy bear and his "old as dirt" hat. 

I don't know if I can point to any other time in my life that I've felt as warm, loved, and safe as I did sitting snuggled up with Grandma and Grandpa in their sun room. In my mind, that's where he is now - reunited with his Number 1.

Grandpa, I will miss you forever. Your light and positivity, your stories and encouragement. I felt so far when you passed, but I remembered our conversation from last time I was home. Your Nova Scotia roots, from Cape Breton to visiting Halifax. You had a way of making me feel like I’m right where I’m supposed to be. You always made me sure and proud when I needed it most. The stories you told will live on through us, and we will miss you but continue the conversation. We will talk about you, and remember to be kinder, to listen more, to laugh and to remind each other we are proud of one another. Family is everything. You are reunited with your number one, tell her we love her and enjoy every moment. The two of you together really are 100%.

We lost an incredible man who has taught so many important lessons in life, many times with just a few words.  You truly have a gift of making everyone in the room feel special and although I will miss you dearly, I will keep the many memories in my heart forever.  I love you Grandpa. When I met Fred Andrews, I had just started dating his second eldest grand daughter, Carrie.  He made it very clear that 'if I ever made her cry, he would punch me in the mouth'.  He continued this threat every time I saw him - for years - - even long after we had wed and had children.  There is no doubt in my mind that if pressed, he would have followed through. 
Over the years, Fred would tell me of his love of sport in Cape Breton.  He spoke vividly of boxing in the shipyards, playing hockey with his friends, the grueling rugby with his co-workers and he had a universal love of all track and field events.  He would speak fondly and with a familiarity of specific Maritime steeplechase runners, boxers, "ruggers" and hockey players as if somehow the entire world was watching Cape Breton as a beacon of athletics. 
Fred spoke humbly about his early careers in spoking bicycle tires, jobs at the shipyards, working for local entrepreneurs, and ultimately his career in insurance.  He was a man who could plow a field, change a diaper, and bind an insurance policy with unquestioned passion and purpose. 
Like all good men from the greatest generation, Fred lived with a sense of purpose and duty.  His duty was unquestionably to his loving wife Mary and their 5 children.  
When he spoke of his family, it was often in an impassioned verbosity about the triumphs (and the tragedies) of them and their families--never leaving out the inconsequential names of the less important actors in each story.  Even in his 90's Fred could recall the name of the clerk at the hardware store, the plumber who lived down the street and the names of all of his children's primary teachers.  He was modest and practical, and never did I once hear him mention any whisper of money or greed, and never a negative word towards another human.  Fred left the world as he came into it, a Maritime boxer from Cape Breton, fighting every day to make it to the next (without complaint), grounded by his duty of his wife and children.  May all fathers be so lucky to leave their families with such a clear understanding of what a good man is, and how he lived every day trying to live up to his own example.

The world is lesser without you, but the heavens are greater.  You were the perfect example of strength and kindness, hard work and exuberance, love and family.  The depth and detail of your stories are rivalled only by the attention and focus you listened with.  You treated each of us like we were the only ones in the room.  Thank you for the gifts of your wisdom, importance of family,  your time and love that you passed to each of your children, which was then gifted to us, so that we could pass it to our children.  A spark of you lives in all of us.  And I promise to spend my life stoking that spark.  I love you.  I miss you.  I hope she's looking at you like this right now.    Until I see you again, I love you Grandpa.  Hug her and tell her all the stories of the last 7 years.

Fred become part of our family, suddenly, when our dad, Neil,  moved to the Roxborough.  What a friendship! We went on the roof all together to watch the blood moon rising; had wonderful Sunday brunches and birthday parties with mom; heard about Fred's beloved Mary; met Fred's lovely family at Christmas when he came dressed as Santa and showered the kids with joy. When dad was in a coma in ICU, Fred came to visit. When asked if he was family, he said, "Yes, of course." But your name is Andrews," the nurse queried.  "Brother from another mother," he smoothly replied.  When dad passed, Fred  heard him from afar say, "Mayday, Mayday", the navy distress signal. They both had that history. I hope they are all together now, full to the gunwales with love.

I so sorry to hear about the loss of Uncle Fred. He really was one of a kind. My prayers and thoughts are with all of you. 

Thank you Fred  for being you and may God preserve and protect your soul into everlasting life in His presence with love. I’m grateful to have known you and to have looked up to you as a child, there were not many role models in my life but you were a trustworthy one. All the pictures in the memorial are a testament to the fact that you lived right, especially the big family pictures, all the wonderful people in your family will keep your memory alive and live on generation to generation. much love to you Fred where you are now, thank you and thank God for you. 

So many happy memories.  Fred’s positivity and love of family will live in my heart forever.  He left this world surrounded by love and arrived in the next to what I’m sure was a great celebration.   
I remember so many summers in Ontario and Cape Breton, so many great times at the farm.  He always welcomed everyone with love and open arms.  100 percent!  

I watched the service with many tears and smiles.    Many of Uncle Fred’s family have never met me, however whenever we were together, he would always mention each of his #1’s.    Though removed from the Andrews’ influence after my Dad’s passing in 1975,  Uncle Fred plus his siblings never allowed me to forget who I was and represent.   He never forgot me or my brother Bill at Christmas time and I hope he knew how much that meant to me.   I am sending big virtual hugs to all.   Hoping he gets to tell my Dad about me and my brother because as we’ve heard time and time again...he’d always would ask how we were.

Robyn.  Condolences to you and all the your family.  That was a lovely tribute  today for  your Dad.   It was great getting to know Fred better over the last number years on his vacations to Big Pond.   He seemed to fit right in with us!  He will be missed.  Dolores, Kissie,  Hugh and Gael.

Dearest Robyn and Joe, Sharon and Darrell, Kathy, Rick and Kathy, Gayle and Scott, and all your beautiful children and grandchildren; my heart and prayers are with you all. Such a beautiful tribute and service for such a wonderful man who lived a truly beautiful life. Thank you for inviting us to share in your father's service; your stories and tribute are pure inspiration. It was so evident that family was everything to your father (and that is certainly the way I remember him) and that he enjoyed life to the fullest. I am so sorry for the pain you are feeling now; grief is the cost of great love. With love and prayers may your hearts be comforted. 

My deepest condolences to all my cousins, their spouses and children.  Mom and Dad (Red and Gerry) always spoke so kindly of Uncle Fred and Aunt Mary, expressing gratitude for all they did to help our family get settled after moving to Ontario.  My mind is flooded with happy summer vacations at Cape Breton and Andrews Christmas parties, where Uncle Fred and Aunt Mary were always a part of.  
Dad really loves his brothers and sisters and I know there was a happy reunion when Uncle Fred arrived in Heaven to join Aunt Mary and the rest of the family.  All my love, Susan

As a neighbour, Fred was a kind, warm and welcoming Gentleman.  We lived beside each other since 2002 and enjoyed his and his late wife Mary's friendship for all these years. Fred had a wonderful family as well and often spoke about them with us.  We were more than neighbours, we were friends.  We will miss his warm smile... We knew of Fred's deep faith in Christ & relished him as brother.

Thinking of Robyn, Joey and all of the Andrews family.  We are so glad that we got to spend time over the past few years getting to know your Dad during his summer visits to Big Pond.  He always had a smile, a story and a bottle of red to share.  When you asked how he was doing it was always 100%!!  Your Dad lived a full life and was so young at heart.  I was telling my son a story tonight of Robyn's 90 year old Dad tearing up the dance floor in the Big Pond fire hall to Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline.   We will miss seeing him at the shore in Big Pond but know he will be smiling down on us.

For many years and moments in my life Grandpa was my steady, reliable and trusted navigational aid that helped guide me through this world. His devotion to the happiness and health of family and friends was an infectious quality that will continue to guide me into the future. So although the world has lost a wonderful person, the strength of his character will provide a lasting impact to myself and I’m sure many others. 100%.

Dear cousins, my Uncle Fred was the rock in the Andrews Family    He did so much to help his brothers families. I know he helped our family move to Ontario. Even housed us for awhile. Then his generosity helped my parents buy a house.  P. S. I found a note in my parents things after they passed.  Mentioned how my Uncle helped them. 
As a kid I remember visits to whom I would call Fred and Mary.  Lol. I was corrected several times “ Uncle Fred. Aunt Mary” by my Uncle.  Eventually I caught on.   Uncle Fred taught me respect at an early age😁
I can imagine a happy bunch of Andrews in Heaven all trying to talk over one another.   Peace to all my family knowing Fred is in loving embraces , forever.

Mary and Fred always made us feel like we were part of the Andrews family, whether on Ferbane, Big Pond, St. Matthew's, or any event we found each other.  My childhood was informed by these generous, kind souls whose children I call dear friends.   Fred loved his family dearly and was dearly loved by them.   And that includes me too.

I am very sorry to hear this news and my thoughts are with you.

I have lots of wonderful memories of my “Uncle Fred”.  On one occasion as a young kid when our parents were all together on a hot summer evening in our backyard and my bedroom window (wide open, no air conditioning of course) was right above the patio where they were sitting.  The laughter was loud and never seemed to stop and I can remember lying there, trying to sleep and not succeeding, and thinking…what the heck could be sooo funny?!  This was typical.  It was always a positive, friendly and fun atmosphere in this group and Uncle Fred was a very big part of it.  Aunt Mary too.

He had a life full of family and friends and love.  It was a life very well lived.

From the entire Stableforth family, we are so sad to hear of  your father’s passing. He was a wonderful man. We  remember over 50 years of friendship with the Andrews family, much of it nurtured at St. Matthew’s Anglican in Willowdale.  Those memories will never pass and we hope they will help to provide joy and comfort in the years to come.

My wife Christine and I have over 50 years of positive interaction with Fred and Mary and many other members of his extended family. Recounting them would fill a book but some come quickly to mind. Playing for and against Fred when he was player coach of the Agency team in the annual Stanley Pot against the State Farm employees. Travelling in Europe and cruising the Caribbean with Fred , Mary, Rick and Kathy, the Harrisons, the Legrows  and many others. Watching and occasionally helping Rick, Gayle, and Sharon create successful insurance agencies. Remembering Christine and Gayle establishing all time homeowner rein-spection records and son in law Joe installing our hardwood floors. 
Fred was respected and admired as an agent by all his policyholders, his fellow agents and employees of State Farm that he came in contact with over his long and illustrious career.
More importantly, along with Mary, he will be remembered for the outstanding family he raised. All you have to do is know them or meet them and you will understand what I mean.






My deepest condolences to the entire Andrews family. Fred was always kind, generous and welcoming. The way he cared for Mary and moved next door during her time at Southlake will forever warm my heart.

I just found out this morning that we have lost Fred, a fine gentleman and a long time friend.
I have known Fred science the early seventys .
It was my pleasure to have known him and done business with him, he will surely be missed.
