Guglielmo is survived by his devoted partner, Zolaika Ali, and his beloved children: Anthony, Violet, Michelle, and Patricia (Willians); Guglielmo was predeceased by his first-born daughter Mary-Lou. He was a proud and loving Nonno to Melissa, Sebastian (Rochelle), Annaliese, Joshua, Olivia, and Leo, and “Papa Nonno” to his great-grandson, Roman.
Guglielmo Poto was born on October 9, 1943, in Lioni, Province of Avellino, Campania, Italy, to Angelo and Maria Poto. He spent his early years on the family farm, where hard work, love, and tradition shaped the foundation of his character. On June 13, 1960, he journeyed to Canada arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax with his brother Vittorio and their parents, fulfilling his father’s dream of offering his youngest children new opportunities and the promise of a good life in Canada, making their home in Toronto.
He is lovingly remembered by his brothers Gaetano and Vittorio, with whom he shared a lifelong bond. He is reunited in Heaven with his parents Angelo and Maria and his dear sisters, Margherita and Mariana. Guglielmo will also be missed by his nieces and nephews, who adored their fun-loving Zio Guglielmo.
In his youth, Guglielmo enjoyed soccer and billiard-style games like gitoni. He soon discovered his gift for woodworking—a talent that would define his life’s work. He began an apprenticeship for Irpinia Carpentry. After mastering the trade, he founded Lioni Carpentry on Hanna Ave, and later established Poto Woodworking, a shop adjacent to his home on Dundas Street in the Trinity-Bellwoods neighbourhood. There he remained, crafting furniture and kitchen cabinets with his skilled, capable hands. His craftsmanship spoke for itself: precise, beautiful, and unmistakably his. Guglielmo was known for his trademark phrase: “If you can wait, I can make.” He believed that true quality took time—and his work proved him right.
His workshop was far more than a place of business. It became a gathering spot filled with laughter, storytelling, Italian card games, friendship, countless plates of pasta, and the occasional glass of vino.
After retiring, he embraced a quieter life filled with Italian music and classic films, and he cherished every moment spent with his family.
A man of humility, kindness, and dedication to family, Guglielmo lived by the simple yet profound words: “Do the best that you can.” His faith, his work ethic, and his gentle strength guided him through life, leaving a legacy built not only in wood, but in love and generosity.
His warmth, humour, and caring presence will remain forever in the hearts of all who loved him. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit continues in the lives he touched and the memories he shaped. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Until we meet again, Riposa in Pace.
