

Passed away at home on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at the age of 94. Hazel was fortunate at the end to be surrounded with love in the presence of her family and friends at Sunrise of Aurora. Predeceased by her husband John, grandson Christopher, and sister Dorothy Irving. She will be greatly missed by her children Lillian (Larry) Hall, Jack (Karen), Jocelyn (Lester) Bates, grandsons Cameron (Kristi), Bradley Bates (Jamie), Bryan Bates (Lindsay), great-grandson Hunter, sister Melva Snyder, and her many relatives and friends. She taught in a one room schoolhouse in Saskatchewan prior to serving in the RCAF during WWII as a Sargeant with Administrative Services in Ottawa. Hazel was known for her passion for golf, having enjoyed many years at Toronto Ladies Golf Club and Bayview Country Club. Bridge, Curling, UCW at Newtonbrook United Church, and volunteering for Meals on Wheels were among her many interests. A heartfelt thank you to all the staff at Sunrise Aurora for their endless kindness and exceptional care and to Dr. Norm Kalyniuk for his care and friendship. Thank you also to the staff and physicians at Southlake Regional Health Centre. A Celebration of Hazel's life will be held on Monday, November 4, 2013 at 11am at Cummer Avenue United Church (formerly Newtonbrook United Church, 53 Cummer Avenue). The service will be followed by a lunch in the church Fellowship Room. Interment to follow at York Cemetery at 2pm. As an expression of sympathy, donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Cummer Avenue United Church, Heart & Stroke Foundation, or Southlake Regional Health Centre, Newmarket.
