Hillary and Miriam, I was so sorry to hear about Duncan’s passing. We had such good times in our youth at Fairy Lake. Duncan was such a kind and humorous friend. He will be remembered as a bright light forever.  My sincerest sympathies. RIP Duncan.

Duncan was certainly a social butterfly with a sharp wit and enduring sense of humor. His stories were plentiful and insights much appreciated we will miss him here at CHIRS. Condolences to his family. RIP bud. 

To read these memories and having shared the stories at Duncan's funeral  only reinforces the sense of loss
 ... I go between tears and laughter as I see how these mirror his wonderful spirit and personality. The similarity of experiences  speak to Duncan's raucous and fun loving nature. Duncan came to me in a time when I was dejected and lifted me up. We became fast friends and shared many fun and foolish times
...and though our time together diminished as the years rolled by, when we got together it was like we had seen each other yesterday

Your impact on my life has been huge with the empathetic world view you imparted to me.

It's been a pleasure knowing and spending time with Duncan over the years - he always knew how to light up a room and make us all laugh, very grateful for all the fond memories at the Dragon and beyond!

We send our condolences to Duncan's family. We both new Duncan for many years. He had an infectious laugh and a strong spirit. Duncan had so many obstacles to overcome and always kept his sense of humour.  He was a kind and caring soul and will be missed by many including us.

Ray and I were sad to hear of Duncan’s sudden passing. He was a great friend and we had a lot of great laughs over many years  over beers at the local pubs. Duncan would often abuse us with his cane but it was always in great fun. I remember when I (Astrid) quit smoking years ago and Duncan decided to as well but unfortunately never held it up at his end and always tried to hide it especially in Busters  with smoke coming out from under the table when he was trying to hiding  his smoke lol. I met Duncan in the Brockville General Hospital in 1978-79. We were both recovering from injuries and doing physio therapy in the Rehab unit. We became fast friends right away and continued our exercise regime outside the hospital by walking through town together. Duncan was very funny. He was always shaking his cane at some imaginary foe and giving them the gears. We found we had other things in common ~ we shared some mutual friends and we both loved music. Duncan and I exchanged mixed tapes back in the day. Many years later Duncan and I ended up living in the same neighbourhood in east end Toronto. I visited him in his home and we shared a few beers together at his local on Kingston Rd. Duncan will be missed.

I will always remember Duncan for his smile, which was constant.  Her certainly marched to his own drum beat which I admired.  He will be sorely missed at our next Ridley reunion.  RIP my friend

Duncan was always a character from the time we met in grade 9 and especially as a member of our grade 10 dorm.  I looked forward to catching up with him at our class reunions knowing he would be one of the first to sign up for the event.  He was a proud member of the class of '74 and he will be missed.  Cheers old friend.  

 
 Duncan was a dear friend and I wouldn't have survived Ridley without him, Rob "who cut" Calcott, Dizzy Dean and other lifetime Ridley people.
 We didn't keep in touch but my heart is heavy with the loss of him.
He was a good guy who never caused trouble and enjoyed having a good time when we hung out.

Well Duncan, that was quite the ride. You overcame so many adversities and enjoyed many an adventure.  Our families have been connected since 1967 and shared so many good,  fun times. Will never forget when you left a little something in the onion drawer and while we were up the mountain, Mom called for dinner. What’s for dinner, you asked? Hamburgers was the reply. Never saw you move quite so fast.   Thanks buddy for so many great memories. You will be missed xo


A true friend to everyone at Ridley… and someone who made every occasion special.  You’ll be missed by all of us.  Condolences to the family, and may we all remain blessed to have had Duncan as part of our lives.

Duncan was my brother’s friend when he joined our family but soon became our brother. He shared our quirky sense of humour and his zest for life, his openness and honesty endeared him to us. I was the annoying little brother who followed them to Hay River to work and was there at the hospital when he was flown out to Edmonton in a coma for 30 days. He had to relearn everything. How to walk, talk, and use his fine motor skills. He went to college and became a sought after audio-visual technician working to set up shows, conferences and meetings in Toronto before the days of a smart phone casting power point to a giant TV screen. He knew everyone. When you walked down the street in the Beaches people would be hailing him constantly and wishing him well. I was always amazed. He was a social being. He needed that human connection and if he didn’t know someone he would, without reservation, call out a greeting to them on the street. And they smiled back at him. He loved to walk and always had interesting walking sticks carved by friends. He was incorrigible. His inhibition wiped away by his brain injury, frequently resulted in inappropriate comments to women. But he always did it with a twinkle in his eye that assured them he was “pulling their leg”. I knew Duncan for 52 years. He was a loyal friend, my brother, and I will miss him dearly.  

I first met Duncan in high school. We instantly became fast friends, sharing many adventures together over the years. We hitchhiked up to Hay River in 1975, spending the next three years there, working in the summer and traveling in the winter. His accident was the final, sad punctuation mark to our time there.
Duncan was a unique and irrepressible spirit, exuberant, demonstrative, and always ready for adventure. He loved people and had a boundless enthusiasm for life. There was an energy and spirit in him that just could not be contained. My life might have looked very different had I not met him.
Thank you Duncan for all that we shared and for your kind and tender heart. I am grateful to have known you.

Many a time Duncan would visit with Jane and I and chat over a cold one. Memories will keep him ever present.

Miss you already, roommate, comrade and life-long friend.  The adventures were marvellous, so to the understanding, advice and humour throughout the years.

Oh Duncan, you made the most of every moment. What a treat to grow up with you at Ridley. You are a member of our strong Ridley community. I will miss, your laugh and your smile. Thanks for your friendship. 

So sorry to hear about my roommate Duncan. That was over 50 years ago at Ridley. He was a bit of a rebel, but was a sensitive guy who opened up to me and we became friends. Even at a reunion a few years ago he made a point of acknowledging and remembering our friendship. I was grateful it meant something to him years later. So Duncan   my friend , you are not forgotten. Carry on. Deepest sympathy to the family.
