John was predeceased by his greatest supporters, his dad Roland and his mum Catherine. He leaves behind his sister Roberta, as well as extended family in Canada and Scotland. He was also predeceased by his dear friend and longtime neighbour, Gail.
As a person with cerebral palsy, John faced many challenges. Despite this, he usually had a cheeky grin and a quick wit to share. With a strong sense of determination, and the help of family and friends, he worked hard to carve out a life for himself that was as independent as possible. His goal was always to be a part of the larger community, without being seen as his disability. Computer technology enabled John to connect with the world; it also allowed him to express his creative side through graphic art.
He treasured his home at the Landsberg-Lewis Housing Co-op, and the community supports that helped him manage and thrive there. His home was also close enough to transit that he could make trips down to Niagara Falls, USA.
John was certainly not a hermit. For many years, he was a familiar face around Richmond Hill. He enjoyed hanging out at the Lone Star and King Henry’s in South Hill, whenever his scooter could get him across the bridge. Some of the people he got to know in these places became part of his family of choice.
He found ways to give his life purpose. His chief joy was the 30+ years as part of the staff at YMCA’s Camp Wabanaki in Huntsville. Thanks to all the camp directors and counsellors who helped John test his limits and reach his potential, especially to those with whom he stayed connected for many years.
Thanks to the Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital for their compassionate care in the last part of John’s life. Thanks also go to his dear school friend Monika, who helped comfort him in his final days.
According to his wishes, John will be cremated. In the spring, there will be an informal Celebration of Life, where John’s family and friends will be invited to gather and share a few words in remembrance. This will take place on June 1st, 2024, at 2pm, at the Kane-Jerrett Funeral Home Thornhill, 8088 Yonge St., Thornhill, ON (tel.905-889-8889).
In lieu of flowers, donations to Camp Wabanaki (YMCA), the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the March of Dimes, or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.kanejerrett-thornhill.ca for the Bergman family.
