

Passed away peacefully at Sunnybrook Hospital on Staurday February 17, 2007, in his 94th year. Beloved husband of the late Marie Levitt; devoted father of Susan Griggs (Harvey) and Dean (Ann); proud grandfather of Andrea (Afshin), Jason, Adam (Jen) and Cameron and loving great granddad of Zoya and Leila.
John was the head of Mathematics at Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute in Toronto for many years passing on the love and learning of mathematics to thousands of students. He was a co-author of several upper school mathematic textbooks used throughout the Province of Ontario. He subsequently became the head of the Math department of the Ontario Department of Education Correspondence division where he authored new courses and communicated with students by mail and phone. During World War II, he applied his mathematical skills by training pilots in the math & science of navigation and as well in helping the returning veterans to upgrade their skills for university entrance.
He was awarded the Certificate for Teaching Excellence by the Ontario Association of Professional Engineers in 1963. He also served as a director of Old Canada Investment Corporation, a TSX mutual fund company, from 1969 to 1991. He was a long time member of the Lawrence Park Lawn Bowling Club where he served as Treasurer and President. He and his family resided near Wanless Park from 1939 to 2005. John and Marie were long time members of Bedford Park United Church where he served as a trustee.
Many thanks to the staff at Donway Retirement Residence who helped John create a new home over the last year and a half after he left the family home. Thanks to the staff and doctors in C Wing, 6th Floor Sunnybrook Hospital for the excellence of their care during his two weeks at the hospital. He maintained his intellect and his sense of humour throughout his stay.
The family will receive visitors on Wednesday from 7 to 9pm at R.S. Kane Funeral Home (6150 Yonge Street, at Goulding, south of Steeles). A Memorial Service for family and friends will be held in the Chapel on Thursday February 22, 2007 at 11a.m.
