June always said she was grateful—for her loving parents, family, friends and a full and happy life. And regardless of how she really felt, if you asked her how she was, she would always say she was ‘fantastic’!
Born in Newtown Cross, PEI, June was one of nine children and grew up surrounded by family. Much of her life was devoted to caring for others. She began her career teaching primary school, nurturing young minds with kindness and patience. Later, she trained at the Royal Victoria Hospital, became a registered nurse, and worked in a psychiatric hospital caring for children. June also served as a counselor at Immigration and Manpower, helping others find their path.
June often accompanied her late husband of 70 years, Preston, an atmospheric scientist, on international work assignments, embracing diverse cultures and experiences. Nevertheless, for many years, they would return to their roots in Prince Edward Island during the summer months.Their cottage at Rice Point became a meeting place for friends and family as well as place where June and Preston enjoyed hobbies of collecting and restoring antiques.
June enjoyed writing poetry for friends and family, sharing her love and wisdom through heartfelt words. She was an active member of Cummer Avenue United Church and a regular and keen Bridge player in several community clubs. June was a fantastic cook, known for her delicious carrot cake and Christmas rosettes. She frequently hosted beautifully presented dinner parties that brought together people with diverse interests resulting in wonderful conversations and new friendships.
She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. H. Preston Sanderson, and her son John (Maryjane).
She will be missed by her daughter Susan (Don), granddaughters Lauren, Heather (Rifat), Paula, and many nieces and nephews.
June is survived by her younger brother Doug and was predeceased by siblings Lorne, Roland, Gordon, Margaret, Alice, Marion, and Kenny.
While June always said she was grateful, it is those who knew June that are grateful for the joy she brought to those around her and the countless lives she touched with her compassion and generosity.
A memorial service and celebration of June’s life will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2026 at 1:00pm at the Kane-Jerrett Funeral Home, Thornhill.
