Lila Kathryn Sills [née Lett] passed away peacefully on July 15, 2022, at Hill House Hospice in Richmond Hill with her daughters, Nancy and Linda by her side. She was 101 – but far younger at heart.
Born on the original family homestead just outside Carp, in the Ottawa Valley, Lila was very proud of her Irish roots and donned shamrock green every St Patrick’s Day.
After finishing school, Lila attended secretarial college and moved to Ottawa during war time. While working for the head of General Electric, Lila met her husband Bill, who dropped in one day to sell Dictaphones. He said he was instantly besotted with this gorgeous auburn beauty with sparkling blue eyes and vivacious personality. They went on their first date on New Year’s Eve 1946, got engaged on Valentine’s Day and married in May. The union led to three children and 68 years of love and laughter until Bill passed away in 2015. They made Toronto home and Lila supported Bill in his ice hockey business, Doublerink Arenas in Vaughan.
A 50 year member of Thornhill Country Club, Lila was a keen curler and golfer, voracious reader and avid collector of early Canadian antiques.
She will be remembered for her impeccable sense of style, love of travel, saucy jokes, infectious laugh, kindness and devotion to family and dear friends. People across generations who knew her have described her as an amazing inspiration. Lila was all that - and much more. And she will be sorely missed.
Survived by her son Chris [Jan], daughters Nancy and Linda; grandchildren Christi, Patrick [Alanna], Rory [Casey], and Kelly; great grand-children; Luke, Layla, Charlotte; brother Major General Kenneth Lett [ret] [Roma] and partner Patricia Firth of Victoria B.C., and sister-in-law Pat Lett of Kanata. Pre-deceased by brothers John and Hyde Lett [Doris].
Heartfelt thanks and deepest appreciation to the staff at Hill House Hospice who cared for Lila with such humanity and compassion.
All friends are warmly welcome to celebrate Lila’s life at the Kane-Jerrett Funeral Home at 8088 Yonge St. in Thornhill on Thursday July 21st, 2022. Visitation at 2pm followed by Service at 3pm and reception thereafter.
