Sr. Mary Margaret Ready SOS, passed into Eternal Life on May 17, 2022. She had lived a very full and generous life. Margaret, proudly and gratefully, had her roots in Prince Edward Island. Born August 23, 1921 on the family farm in Tignish, Prince County, to Francis Ready and Annie Wallace, she was one of four children.
Her farm roots were her special teachers throughout her life. They developed in her a capacity to accept and adapt to change, a valuing of relationships and people from many places and backgrounds, and the qualities of conscientious responsibility, kindness and warmth These would characterize Margaret’s life.
Margaret received a teaching licence in 1939 in Charlottetown. While in Charlottetown, a retreat director introduced her to the Sisters of Service. After teaching in Tignish for six years, she spent time with family in Boston, Massachusetts. and then was invited by a friend to stay in Montreal at the Sisters of Service Residence. The experience of the sisters confirmed her desire to enter. She did so on January 21, 1950.
As Margaret began her life in ministry, she was always open to go where she was called to serve a need. Her first mission was in Rycroft, northern Alberta, serving as housemother to boarding students from outlying farms. She then spent some years in service to the community before being called to a position of leadership in catechetical work in North Dakota, an SOS mission in the U.S. Her capacity for adapting to change was shown as she moved to Halifax and entered training in social welfare, which was used in social work ministry in Nova Scotia and in New Brunswick. A new need called her back to catechetical work as principal of the correspondence school of religion in Clarenville, Newfoundland for nine years. During those years, she also served on the General Administration Council of the SOS. Community service later called her to be coordinator of the retired SOS sisters in Scarborough Court, Toronto. After a sabbatical, she thought she would enter retirement herself. However, Sr. Adua Zampese’s invitation to join her in Radville, Saskatchewan to serve in this farming community with no resident priest, called forth her generosity. She partnered with Adua for five years there as a loving presence to the parishioners.
On leaving Radville, Margaret finally, entered into a well-deserved retirement in Toronto. After some years at La Salle Manor, her last years were spent at the Houses of Providence, Providence Healthcare, where she served the community in prayer ministry. Many thanks are expressed to all the caregivers who ministered to Margaret at La Salle Manor and at the Houses of Providence.
The Sisters of Service extend their deep sympathy to all the family and friends of Sr. Margaret.
