Cope, Mildred Cathryn Higgins – November 11, 1925, to February 2, 2023. It is with heavy hearts that we announce that the matriarch of our family passed away peacefully and surrounded by love. Predeceased by the love of her life, John Edward (1980); her beloved son, Craig Justin (2012); and her much loved grandchildren Jennifer Dean Khayat (Wisam) (2019) and Michael Justin Cope (2005). Celebrating her life and mourning her passing are her children: Linda Dean (Dave), Karin MacIsaac (the late Michael), Laury (Wendy), Paula Darlington (Steve), and her daughter-in-law Wendy. Much loved grandmother (Grams) of Jeffrey Dean (Caitlin), John Dean (Cynthia), Beth Johnston (Gregory), Kelly Sullivan (Teresa), Kristiana Cope (Stefan), Brittany Cope (Duncan), Thomas and Jack Darlington. Cherished great-grandmother (G.G.) of Jonah Simpson; Kaiden, Cole, and Cooper Khayat; Max, Sophia, and Hadley Dean; and Ella and Holden Johnston. Will be greatly missed by her treasured niece, Lesley Higgins, and other extended family.
Mildred was the only daughter of Leo and Mae Higgins, and sister to Laurence (Olga), Leo (Mary and Rose) and Jack, all of whom predeceased her. She is survived by her sister-in-law Linda.
Mildred was a woman of very deep faith. She was a founding member of the Franciscan Church of St. Bonaventure, Don Mills, Ontario, where she was very active in the parish community for nearly 70 years. She was a lifelong member of the Catholic Women’s League and helped to establish the Secular Franciscan Order. It is through St. Bonaventure’s that Mildred, John, and their family developed many lifelong friendships, which continue today with the second and third generations of these families.
The Cope family extends their immense gratitude and heartfelt thanks to the staff of North York General Hospital—Seniors’ Health Centre, in particular, Susie and Saba, for the dedicated care and compassion they showed our mother during the last four and a half years of her life.
As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to St. Clare Inn (1300 Leslie Street, Toronto, Ontario, M3C 2K9), St. John the Apostle Church (Friar David Collins, 88 Patrick Street, Kingston, Ontario K7K 3P1), or the Alzheimer Society of Toronto.
We will miss her dearly but celebrate with gratitude her long and remarkable life.
May Mildred watch over and protect all of us who knew and loved her.
