Mollie passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 in the first hours of her 99th year. Loving mother of Paul (Gillian Stoker-Lavelle) and Paddy (Gord Wahn), cherished Nana of Geoff (Lauren Hong) and Elizabeth (Dan Dillon) Stoker-Lavelle. This Christmas Mollie was overjoyed to meet her great-granddaughter Sophie Dillon at three months of age. She was the daughter of Albert William Lancey and Dora Jennings Lancey. Mollie was predeceased by her husband Herb in 1973 and by her brother George a year later.
For many years Mollie has been the unofficial matriarch of the Lavelle family, tactfully ensuring that family members gathered to celebrate together despite busy lives and the separating distances. She always greatly enjoyed the company of her four sisters-in-law, her many nieces, nephews, and all of their children.
Mollie was born in Brook, England and immigrated to Canada as an infant. She was educated at Loretto College School in Toronto,
Mollie and Herb were married in 1947 and built their lives around family and their community of Don Mills, having moved there in its very early days in 1954 before paved roads, telephone lines and postal delivery arrived. They were instrumental in the formation and growth of St. Bonaventure’s Church in their new community. Mollie was school secretary at St. Bonaventure’s School for almost thirty years and is still fondly remembered by generations of its former students and their parents. Mollie’s active involvement in the community and the school, and a wonderful group of friends provided a new path for her abundant energy after Herb’s untimely passing in his mid-50s.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Mollie’s Life on Tuesday, February 7th, 1:00pm. in the chapel at R.S. Kane Funeral Home, 6150 Yonge Street.
The family wishes to extend its appreciation to the staff of Thompson House, Mollie’s home for the past two years, for the excellent care given to Mollie.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Hospital for Sick Children (www.sickkidsfoundation.com).
