Peter Chen was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1921. As a youth, he was an excellent student who attended the prestigious Keio University. Akin to attending Harvard University in the United States (as Keio was the best university in Japan), Peter was especially proud of this achievement as he was also the only Taiwanese student in the graduating class of 1944.
Upon graduation from Keio, Peter was drafted as a marine for the Royal Japanese Navy during World War II. He has shared some amazing wartime stories, including being chased by an American Mustang fighter jet while patrolling the beaches on a remote island in Japan. Fortunately, he finished his service without any major injuries, with invaluable lessons learned about discipline, loyalty and honour as a marine Lieutenant.
After the war, Peter worked for many years as a bank manager in Taipei. In 1966, with his wife Jean and 5 children (aged 12-22), he moved to Canada. His family will always appreciate Peter for bringing them to this land of opportunity. In Canada, Peter worked as a CGA accountant for the Ministry of Natural Resources, and then the Ontario Science Centre until he retired in 1986.
In his spare time, Peter enjoyed many hobbies including fishing, gardening, wood carving and travelling, with trips to Egypt, various parts of Europe, China, Japan and his homeland of Taiwan.
Peter’s greatest achievement and legacy though was his family – he was the proud father of 5, grandfather of 11 and great-grandfather of 8.
He will always be remembered as a kind, loving person who loved to tell stories – especially as a famous Taiwanese Keio boy being pursued by many Japanese girls. As with Peter, his motto in life of studying hard, working hard and playing hard will never be forgotten. He will be sadly missed. Rest in Peace.
Eternal love from the Chen, Chow, Engels and Lee families.
