It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Morton Warling on November 10, 2015. Loving husband of Ruth for 60 years. Proud father of Leann, Michele and Arden, and father-in-law to Ken, Myles and David. Loving Grandpa to ShayLee, Dane, Kyle, Cody, Sean, Ryan and Colin. Friend, mentor and confidante to many.
Mort was born on April 11, 1931 at Vandeleur, the family farm in Artemesia Township in Grey County. He was the fifth of six children born to Edna and Elmer Warling and is predeceased by his siblings Frank, Beth, Ray, Pat and Ted.
Mort moved from Vandeleur to Mount Dennis where he first worked at AV Roe. He then returned to school and received a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters of Education from the University of Toronto.
For 32 years he worked as a teacher and principal in the North York Board of Education and was awarded the Claude Watson Award in 1986.
While working at AV Roe, Mort met Ruth and after a whirlwind romance they were married on August 27, 1955.
Mort was a lifelong supporter of the NDP and ran as a candidate for the provincial legislature in 1966. He ran and was elected as an Alderman in Ward 6 of North York in 1974.
He was extraordinarily active, competed in marathons, cycled from Vancouver to Winnipeg and through Europe and at the age of 75 around Lake Ontario.
Mort was industrious and liked nothing more than a good building project. He left his mark in Vancouver, Florida, North York and Thornhill but nowhere was it more evident than at the cottage on Six Mile Lake. This was his sanctuary and the inspiration for may of his building plans. The cottage was also the centre of a great deal of family life including large Thanksgiving celebrations, massive art days with the grandchildren, nature walks and relaxation.
It was Mort’s wish that he be cremated. A celebration of his life will be held at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home, 6150 Yonge St. (at Goulding, south of Steeles) on Saturday, November 21, 2015 from 2-4pm. Condolences www.rskane.ca
