Born in Toronto, Ontario, to Frank and Mary Swider, Tom was raised in New Toronto alongside his beloved sister, Phyllis. A proud graduate of the University of Toronto, he went on to build a successful career as a chemical engineer. His early adult years spent in Montreal held a special place in his heart—full of stories, friendships, and fond memories he often revisited.
A devoted husband to Sharon for 42 years and loving father to his three daughters—Sara (and her husband Jeff), Tiffany, and Lori—Tom was, sometimes, also fondly referred to as Papa Bear. He was the kind of dad who didn’t take himself too seriously and often welcomed being the butt of the joke, always with a twinkle in his blue eyes.
Tom was the cherished son-in-law of Violet and Laurie McPhee, with whom he shared many special family moments over the years.
Though he never quite mastered the art of fishing—despite what he might argue—he treasured his time on the water, especially with his father-in-law Laurie, his brother-in-law Laurie, and his nephew Geoffrey.
He was a loyal fan of the Toronto Blue Jays, and in his younger days, enjoyed playing both golf and tennis.
Tom enjoyed playing cards at the cottage with his family, but mostly for the company and conversation. He had a habit of chatting through the entire game, whether it helped his odds or not.
He had a talent for gardening, especially with his tomato plants, which he tended with care each summer. His tomatoes were the best you could ever taste, a true highlight of his green thumb, and his harvests were always generously shared.
Tom had a soft spot for animals, especially the family’s cherished cats: Pepper, Tango, and Lilly.
He lived a life full of humour, heart, and warmth. Tom leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and love that will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to Mackenzie Health Hospital.
