After a short illness our beloved Mum and Gramma slipped quietly away just before midnight on February 27, 2012. She died in hospital, of causes unknown, but she had lost her will to live and said that she wished to close her eyes and sleep forever. Her wish came true, as did our fervent prayer not to see a grand dame deteriorate and diminish. She was lucid until almost the very end and her biggest concern was that Phil and Rita take care of each other and love each other and that the grandkids, Adam and Sylvia know how much she loved them.
Vera will be cremated soon and the immediate family and close friends will celebrate her life on the day she would have turned 92.
There will also be a short service in the spring, at a time to be determined, when she will be buried with her beloved Fred at Springhill Cemetery outside Ottawa. Friends and family in Ottawa will be advised.
Vera's wry British sense of humour was intact until the very end. "I'll try to die at a convenient time," she quipped. Her fervent desire was to not be a burden. She was never that. We (son Phil, daughter-in-law Rita, grandson Adam and granddaughter Sylvia) miss her terribly already. We are grateful for the years we had together and that she did not suffer.
