It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ms. Wai Ming Chiu who died
on the morning of August 25th, 2016, at the Mon Sheong Long-Term Care home. Ms.
Chiu was 92 years old.
Ms. Chiu was born in Hong Kong on October 9, 1923. She grew up during a tumultuous
time in history and never finished her schooling during the Japanese occupation of Hong
Kong in World War II. She spent much of her adult years in Hong Kong in volunteer and
paid positions in nursing and public health, in particular with St. John’s Ambulance
corps. When she was about to become an aunt to her younger brother’s children, Ms.
Chiu pursued child care training so that she could help a hopping household with four
children born within 4 years!
Ms. Chiu moved to Canada in November, 1975 to join her brother, sister-in-law, three
nieces and one nephew in the suburb of Thornhill. Affectionately called “Goo Ma” by her
nieces, nephew and their friends, Ms. Chiu was the “worker bee” who looked after the
household and children for the working parents. Ms. Chiu accepted Christ and became
a member of then East Toronto Chinese Baptist Church that later became North Toronto
Chinese Baptist Church. She served the church in various capacities including the
baptismal and communion services, prayer chain, Caleb Fellowship and visitations.
Even in her declining health and physical weakness, Ms. Chiu continued to joyfully go to
church every Sunday where she sang, read Scripture, gave her offering and listened to
the sermon. She attended North Toronto’s church service for the last time on August
14th, 2016.
Ms. Chiu was an excellent cook and an avid newspaper reader. Ms. Chiu’s culinary
talents were legendary and enjoyed by her family and friends who were always amazed
by her ability to put on multi-course Chinese meals especially for special holidays in the
Chinese calendar. She enjoyed fine dining, Chinese soap operas, socializing and travel
with family and friends. Ms. Chiu was fearless, feisty and fashionable- always well
dressed and well adorned.
Ms. Chiu was predeceased by her mother, Mrs. Chiu Chau Shup Eng, her sister, Mrs.
Chow Chiu Bik Lin, and her sister-in law, Mrs. Sally Chiu. Ms. Chiu leaves behind her
beloved nieces Pauline (Joseph Lo), twins Peggy (Ken Yuen) and Priscilla (Kevin
Pasma), Phoebe (Max Li), nephew Nelson (Janice) and brother Yuk Wing (Yan).
Visitation at 10AM and funeral at 11AM will be held on Sept. 9th, 2016 at R. S. Kane
Funeral Home (6150 Yonge Street, North York) followed by the interment service at
Highland Memorial Gardens (33 Memory Gardens Lane, Willowdale). The Chiu family
invites friends of Ms. Chiu to join in a celebratory lunch at Omei Restaurant (420
Highway 7 East, Richmond Hill) after the interment service. In lieu of flowers, donations
in memory of Ms. Chiu may be made to the St. John’s Ambulance Toronto Chapter
(www.sja.ca), North York General Hospital Geriatrics Program (www.nygh.ca) and North
Toronto Chinese Baptist Church.
Goo Ma was much loved and will be sorely missed. We thank God for her life and
legacy. Glory be to God!
