It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband and father, Walter, on June 7, 2021 at Sunnybrook Hospital.

Walter leaves behind his heart broken wife, Lucy, and his dearest son, Walter Jr. Godfather to David Krysak, Jr. He will be deeply missed by a large network of dear friends, colleagues, and students.

Walter was a high school chemistry teacher at Leaside High School, where he devoted thirty-four years of his teaching career. In addition to his commitment as a teacher, he was a volleyball coach, bringing the girls volleyball team to the OFSAA Championship. He will be remembered for his deep commitment and passion for chemistry, and for making chemistry relatable through real world examples for all students. Walter was respected by his students and colleagues alike.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Noah Forman, Walter’s primary physician, for the many years of compassion and patient centered care. They will always be grateful for his dedicated care and support throughout the years. A special thanks and recognition to Lidia Grossi, Dr. Forman’s executive administrative assistant, for her professionalism and caring.

The family would also like to thank Dr. Matthew Oliver, division head of Nephrology at Sunnybrook Hospital, Dr. Jeremy Gilbert and Dr. Steven Orlov, endocrinologists, along with the countless dialysis nurses and Dr. Sheldon Tobe, in the Sunnybrook nephrology unit, Dr. Amanda Mayo, amputee rehabilitation and Daniel Maassen, prosthetist. Dr. Melvin Silverman, senior staff nephrologist at Toronto General Hospital. Dr. Leslie Spevack, urologist at North York General Hospital. Additional thanks to Dr. Robert Myers, cardiologist at Sunnybrook, and the entire ICU team during Walter’s most critical care.

Services at this time will be held privately for family and by invitation only due to COVID-19 restrictions, on Monday, June 14, 2021 at 10:30am at the Kane-Jerrett Funeral Home, 8088 Yonge Street, Thornhill.

Following the funeral service, a committal service will take place at York Cemetery, 160 Beecroft Road, North York at 12 pm. For those wishing to pay a final respect to Walter, you can do so at York Cemetery in Section N Lot 665 following the committal rites. Donations in memory of Walter may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Kidney Foundation.

Dear Lucy and Walter JR,

My deepest condolences on your loss.
Walter Sr had been a good friend, big supporter of what we do and most of all, love his Apple shares.

Walter was a kind, gentle and humble person. Minnat, Shirley and I will truly miss him. We’ll miss his smile and sense of humour, funny stories and great laugh.

He truly is an apple in everyone’s eyes and forever he’ll stay in our hearts.

You can rest now my friend, free of pain and suffering.

God Bless, Lucy and Walter Jr. keep strong .

Walter Gitow married my cousin Lucy. Together they had a son who they loved very much. Walter's world spun around his family.
His parents, Lucy's parents, their son and extended family . I often saw them when they would come down to Florida. Getting together was always a treat , whether it was in Siesta Key, Pasadena , Ft. Meyers or Palmetto. How many times we sat at the beach, or on the dock of the bay. Wally loved to discuss chemistry with my husband Rob, and taught him some things he did not know.
He had a warm smile and was always kind , courteous and a gentleman . He will hold a place in our heart forever. I will cherish his memory , and it will always be a blessing

Dear Lucy and Walter Jr.

I am so very sorry to hear about the passing of Walter Sr. Lucy, your and Walter's friendship with my parents was always so wonderful to see. The genuine pleasure you all took in seeing each other, albeit, at those rare church functions, was wonderful to see. Friendship through the years is truly special.

My sister Natasha and I, are sending our condolences to you and your family - we hope you find some peace today.

Dearest Lucy and Wally,

Our heartfelt condolences on the passing of Vova. He always had a smile and a kind word whenever I saw him.

My fondest memories of him are of the hijinks that Vova and my brother Alex got up to at the Beriozki in their teens. I vividly remember the time they fit what seemed like 7 or 8 people into my parents’ Volkswagen Beetle.

May God grant you comfort at this time. Eternal Memory!

Dear Wally. Deepest condolences from Pat and myself. I only met your father a few times but remember him well. Your mother I think of fondly from many years at Northview. An unfailingly cheerful and kind woman. This must be very hard on her and you. Your father was much too young.

My condolences to the Gitow family. Mr. Gitow was a teacher who cared about his students beyond academics. With his encouraging, friendly manner and infectious laugh, "Geets" had a positive impact on many LHS students.

Dear Lucy and Junior,

I remember “Vova” as a happy person who enjoyed laughing at jokes and gathering with friends to share food, drink and stories.
He loved teaching and had many memories of students and adventures.
A smiling face is the way I would like to remember him.

Sweet dreams and Vichna Yomu Pamiat!
