Larry Horton was born on October 16, 1922 in McCook, Nebraska to Dewey and Minnie Horton. Just a few weeks after his 92nd birthday, Larry passed away on October 31, 2014 in Denver, Colorado.
Larry was a strong willed man who was determined to live life to the fullest. He specialized in the art of driving enormous semi-trucks and continued building a strong work ethic in the construction field. Many friends and family remember Larry travelling from state to state to help pave roads. Larry and his wife, Frona enjoyed travelling together. They have seen the sights of Alaska, California, Nevada, Wyoming, and even Mexico to name a few places. In fact, some of Larry’s favorite memories were spending the cold winter months on the warm lands of Mexico where he would go deep sea fishing.
Fishing was significant in Larry’s life. Being outside and appreciating the beauty of fishing allowed Larry to be a part of Mother Nature. There was always an open invitation to anyone who wanted to fish with Larry. For those who didn’t know how; it was an honor for him to teach people the skill of casting a reel.
There was a reason why Larry lived to the age of 92. He always stayed active; it was rare to find Larry lying around and doing nothing. Not only did Larry have a passion for fishing; he also had a close relationship with his bike. Everyone was worried that bike riding in his nineties would be detrimental to his health, but Larry was determined to ride till the end. People who knew Larry also learned to never tell him what to do or what to not do. Larry would be the one to make the decision and we admired him for that.
Larry is survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family. He also leaves behind numerous friends. Larry is preceded in death by his wife, Frona Horton; siblings: Arleia Gerze, Vieda Jenkins, Karl Horton, and Alvin Horton; parents: Dewey and Minnie Horton.
Larry touched the lives and hearts of many people. He was a teacher, a role model, a mentor, and a friend. The beautiful memories together will never be forgotten and the stories will continue to be told. Larry was loved by many and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 from 3-7pm at Olinger Highland Mortuary. The funeral service will be on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 10am at Olinger Highland Mortuary. The interment will follow the service at Elmwood Cemetery in Brighton, Colorado. A reception will follow the burial at Olinger Highland reception room.
