In his younger years Duffy went to Tulelake High School, was raised in a farming community, riding horses, and grew to be an amazing basketball player.
In his adult years he carried on his passion and zest for the game through coaching youth basketball. He focused on skills coaching, giving it your all, and winning of course (of which he coached more victories than we can count). Other sports joined in importance, as they were a part of the family DNA.
During his professional years Duffy started working at First National Bank in 1968, which later became First Interstate Bank, with his final role as Vice President Operations; at the time the bank was bought out by Wells Fargo he took a leap of faith at early retirement and didn’t look back.
He traveled, enjoyed hiking, kayaking, his favorite sports car of the moment, spending time at the beach or the condo in Las Vegas. He knew his way around a pool table and would challenge anyone in a game of backgammon. In his final years he liked to spend time in the yard at his home in Gresham, OR, watching sports, laughing, and talking with loved ones.
Duffy has one remaining sister Faye Cafferty, and his ex-wife Shirley Sargent remained a true friend and lunch companion the past few years. He was predeceased by his brother Michael Adams, and his second wife whom he spent many years with Charlotte Winther Adams.
Fortunate to have many amazing children, he leaves behind daughters Lacey Hall of Portland, OR, married to Craig; Lindsey Adams of Whitesboro, TX; Lisa Adams of Boise, ID; Whitney Schumaker of St Cloud, FL; and Tracie Rougeau of Oklahoma City, OK, married to Greg. In addition, his sons Brian Adams of Beaverton, OR, married to Mara; Barry Adams of Gresham, OR, married to Andrea; and Doug Adams of Parker, CO, married to Karen.
He loved to brag about his grandchildren including Nicholas, Sebastian, Anna, Caden, Maddox, Noah, Zane, Karl, Kendrick, Sam, Ben, Harper, Grace, Audrey, Louis, Nathan, Nick, and Casey, and the countless dogs and cats that have been a part of the family. “Dad” was proud of the hardworking and upstanding people his children and grandchildren have become as many are successful professionals including educators, pilots, medical professionals, and executives in their fields of choice.
A memorial tile will be placed in Duffy’s honor at Red Rock Canyon in Las Vegas, NV. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 10, 2025, 1:30-3:00pm at Six Corners Cafe on SW Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy, Portland, OR. If you would like to join us in the Celebration of Duffy please RSVP to Lisa Adams at [email protected].
