Mr. Eivers and I were usually at odds. I was one of the few students who didn't need his grammatical lessons, though I did appreciate learning to diagram sentences. NOBODY else ever bothered to teach that at our school.

His choices of literature to teach were unique and challenging, and the grammatical lessons he enforced were unparalleled at our school.  He even demanded competence and lucidity in our choices and treatment of essay subjects. 

He was in the top three most influential high school teachers I had. I am incredibly sad that he has passed before I thought to contact him and thank him.

Toni,I just heard about your lose yesteday.  I will always have fond memories of you and Ed

Toni, I just heard of Ed's passing. He and I were good friends in High School and played BB together. We tried to get together in the last year, but never connected. From all the messages sent, Ed was really respected and a great teacher. I was hoping to see him last year at our 50th reunion. I will never forget him.

Mr. Eivers taught us a lot more than spelling and grammar.  He taught us to care about each and every work we created.  He taught us how to take criticism.  He taught us how amazing it felt to meet his high expectations, and to raise our own expectations for ourselves.

What I learned from Mr. Eivers has had a profoundly positive impact on my professional life and on the human being I have become.  I feel privileged to have had Mr. Eivers as a teacher and can only hope that my children will have teachers as fine as him.

I still primarily remember him as Mr. Tollefsen, and it was tough to adjust to the name change.  
He was one of those teachers that I enjoyed because of his tough but fair nature.  Always demanding the best you could give, while never being demeaning in the process.  
Sorry to see him pass at such a young age.  RIP Mr. Tollefsen, and thoughts and prayers to the family.

Mr. Eivers was a tough teacher, but we learned how to diagram a sentence and write an essay that made sense.  I was in his class before the REDO stamp!  He had a red ball point pen that he forcibly scribbled the dreaded 'redo' word across the page, sometimes tearing the top page!  A fellow classmate gave him the REDO stamp.
You will always be in my memory as the man who taught me to spot grammatical and typographical errors.  To this day I see them in published works and grimace.

I didn't  have him as a teacher while I was there in the late 70's. But from reading all the very heart felt comments I wish I would of had him as a teacher! He is what is missing in our classrooms today!! A dedicated man who honestly cared if his students had a quality education! God bless him and his loving family!

The best words fail me at this time as they would never fail Ed.  I can only say that I am blessed to have been his colleague, to have shared stories and students.  I will always remember his kindness and our conversations, and will forever see him looking over the top of his glasses.  Condolences to Ed's family.

Mr Eivers was my favorite teacher at Parkrose High School. He was tough, but he was fair.  I enjoyed his 'redo' stamp even when I fell victim to it, as it appealed to my perfectionist personality. He had a good sense of humor and cared a great deal about his students.

It's wonderful to read the messages of so many past students.  Clearly Mr. Eivers was an outstanding teacher, who touched MANY lives, inspired us and guided us.  So much more than just a teacher.

I too remember Mr. Eivers' class with such fond memories.  I've enjoyed recounting stories of the REDO stamp with a smile and a laugh.  Striving for excellence was a challenge and an honor.  

I loved trying to find new and unusual words in the dictionary to incorporate into a new story to see if I could stump him.  I recall a fellow student not being allowed to type papers until they could turn in a ledgible handwritten copy.  Mr. Eivers did strive for excellence, but he was always supportive.  I loved that he could tell you what book, chapter and pages to find the information you needed to correct some common errors. To earn a happy hippo filled you with great pride.  

We learned a lot from Mr. Eivers.  He was a great man, helping to send great young men and women out into the work.  Thank you Mr. Eivers - you will not be forgot.  

My sympathies to his family, as I know that losing a loved one is never easy - no matter the circumstances.

He was tough.  But his class was always fun.  And I learned so much from him.  I can honestly say I'm a better person for having had him as a teacher.

In all my years of schooling, I can honestly say that Mr. Eivers was one of the best and most memorable teachers I have ever had.  Not only is he memorable for the infamous stamp and those precious few seconds he would give you to pull your paper away before the word REDO screamed red at the top of the page. Nor for his insistence that only Ticonderoga Number 2 pencils be allowed in his classroom. He is most memorable to me for the confidence he had that each of his students should and could meet his high expectations.  You dreaded the walk to his desk to present your work, but you also knew he wouldn't let you fail. Nor would he let you give up or present excuses.  As a teacher now myself I use what Mr. Eivers taught me everyday to help my young students become writers, just as he did for me.

Amanda, Stuart, Edie and Mrs Eivers, I am so sorry for your loss. I remember his huge presence and commanding voice. You are all in my thoughts.

Mr Eivers taught me more than grammar, he taught me how to think, how to construct a sentence, how to move a story or thought forward, how to think critically, and most important of all was the the lesson on accepting crtique. Lining up beside his desk, we learned together how doing it right the first time saved a lot of time down the road.  That lesson has been invaluable to me in the years that followed my time with Mr Eivers in 10th Grade English.  

My heart goes out to the Eivers family, know Mr Eivers impact in this world was wide, and that those that knew him as teacher, send you his family our thoughts of love and kindness in this time of loss.

I had Mr.Eivers as my English teacher back in 1977. That was about when he went from Tollefsen to Eivers. I remember he was tough but sincere. I also remember when some stole his REDO stamp so he just wrote REDO in red ink on the papers until he replaced it..

Pshaww!!  The man may be dead but the REDO will live on in infamy.  Good word, infamy; what does it mean?

Mr. Eivers, I would like to give your entire teaching career a triple happy hippo.  You are hereby guaranteed a well-deserved A for the remainder of the term.  May your rest be now undisturbed by gross grammatical errors.  If they cannot fit the entirety of your fabulous Author's License upon your gravestone, may they at least put a nice sentence diagram there.

You were feared, you were respected, you were damn good at what you did.  You will always be a treasured memory of my high school years.  (Class of '97)

Mr. Eivers was my all time favorite teacher in high school. Very strict but very good at what he did and he taught his students how to read write and form correct sentances so in my book he was an awesome teacher that will be very much missed. :-)

I had your class back in 1996 and your teachings have stayed with me. English is my first language, talking isn't the problem it was writing within the context of the rules of our language. The red REDO stamp has been one of the most successful conversations on my facebook page. You truly are one of the great teachers that molded so many, I am grateful to have been taught by you. RIP and my condolences to the loved ones that our grieving over their loss.

Three of our children had Mr. Eivers for English.  They always feared and hated the re-do stamp too. This stamp made a BIG impact on their lives.  All 3 of them have completed graduate school and one completed his JD.  We are so proud to say that Mr. Eiver's is responsible for having perfected their use of the English language and we attirbute that to his steadfastness in perfection.  He was an amazing teacher and had the gift.  He will always be remembered by our family and we send our condolences to you his family. When I think of Mr. Eivers, a single word comes to mind -- legacy.... "Good word, legacy, what does it mean?"  In this context, legacy is the ability to see the person in the student, to meet that person at his/her level, and to immediately raise the bar.  It is the ability to strike a small chord of fear, command an overwhelming level of respect, demand excellence, and demonstrate compassion.  It is a  heart for teaching, a heart for learning, a heart for others.  It is an unfailing drive for success, measured by the achievements of those he taught.  That legacy lives in the walls of Parkrose High School, and it will forever live in the souls of each of us who were fortunate enough to have called Mr. Eivers our teacher.

Mr. Eivers was a great teacher. His class was never boring. He was brutal. There was 100 word essay without repeating a single word. The redo stamp probably damaged the desk. He was brutal. He taught us that it truly mattered that we get it right. He would laugh out loud when he'd find a typo in the Oregonian. Now when I find a typo in the paper I think of him in that upstairs hallway at PHS.
He made us better. Mr Eivers raised the bar for his students and I will always be grateful for that. For every student of his that posts comments online, there are probably hundreds of others that share the same sentiment. Mr Eivers' Opus. Thoughts and prayers to Eden and the rest of the family.

Mr. Eivers was by far the greatest teacher I have ever had, and God knows I've had a lot of them over my scholastic career.  But teaching me syntax, grammar and narrative style was not his greatest impact on me.  My father died the year that I had him as an English teacher.  All of the teachers knew about it, yet none of them except Mr. Eivers could be bothered to say anything comforting to me.  The impact that Mr. Eivers sharing his condolences had on me is immeasurable because it was the only moment during those dark times when I felt that someone actually cared about me.  Thanks, Mr. Eivers.

Mr. Eivers was a great teacher. I looked forward to watching him score our assignments. He truly found pleasure in grading a poorly written paper. He was brutal. I remember that he would read the Oregonian in the morning and he'd laugh out loud when he found a typo. Now and then I'll find a typo in my morning paper and I think back to that upstairs hallway at PHS. 
He made us better. He taught us that it really DOES matter. He set a high standard for us, and for that I am grateful.

Wow, what a loss for the parkrose community and beyond. Mr. Eivers had such an amazing impact for many of us. I can speak on behalf of the class of '91. He meant business; learned so much from him! My vocabulary was greatly increased. 1 word i remember him introducing me to, which i use quite frequently, is "pshaw." My kids have even caught on to this. Thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Mr. Eivers was a truly inspiring teacher, I adored his classes despite the dreaded REDO stamp. He helped many Parkrose students not only improve their writing and vocabulary skills, but our skills as people as well. You will be missed and thank you for all you did for us students.

Because of you, I am a better writer and have a greater appreciation for the English language.  You were a fantastic teacher and will be remembered forever.

One of the hardest teachers I had the good fortune to learn from. Mr. Eivers taught me a lot about not only English, but about who I was as a person. He taught me to did deeper than the surface of what one is trying to communicate. One of my fondest memories of Parkrose High is the day I received my triple Happy Hippo! You will be missed.

Mr. Eivers was my first favorite person.  Everyone reading these messages, who did not have him as a teacher, will never understand the significance of snatching your paper out from under his nose before it was stamped "REDO," and they'll certainly never understand when you are in front of him with your weekly paper, and he takes out the "Happy Hippo" stamp.  My double happy-hippo stamped day, was life changing.  I love this man and think about him everyday.  He was a gift from God, and I cannot wait to meet him again.  I'm sorry he is gone.

Thank you Mr. Ivers for all you gave my children.  They still love you. I am sorry for the families loss.

The best teacher I ever had. Even my friends who I didn't go to high school with have heard me talk about Mr. Eivers and his redo stamp. Seriously taught me a lot. Many Parkrosians don't come out with good grammar, writing or typing skills. It is because of this man, that I have that. RIP Mr. Eivers. You were an awesome dude.

Mr. Eivers was one of the best teachers I had at Parkrose HS.  I was the recipient of many "REDOs" but I also got two (2!) highly coveted Happy Hippos.  He taught me that hard work pays off, the written word can produce magic and to always go placidly amid the noise and haste.  Goodbye friend.

I think of Ed Eivers almost daily. From the sentence diagrams to the vocabulary words and the dreaded REDO stamp. He will be missed.

Thank you Mr. Eivers for expanding my vocabulary, teaching us words like superfluous and pedantic. Thank you for imparting the excitement you possessed for learning, writing, reading and poetry. I also had the pleasure of seeing you in a different light for three years as my basketball coach.  There you displayed your ever present passion for the game, challenging all of us to play our best, work as a team and further our love of basketball.  Even when you yelled at us, I could tell how much you enjoyed being our coach.  So many lessons you taught continued to enter my mind years later as I played basketball in college, taught and tried to uphold the high standards you had and coached youth basketball. Your lessons have truly had quite a legacy.  I know your family meant the world to you. Rest in peace. You will be truly missed by multitudes.

One of my most favorite teachers from H.S. Today, I send loving thoughts to my H.S. friend, Eden and family.  I remember him giving me an A in the class one year for writing a "perfect paper" handwritten (rewritten 10 times) to his liking! Truely one of the best teachers in my life!  Thank you Mr. Eivers for all your years of devotion to children and education! with love...

You taught me to have pride in my work.  I will never forget you.  I may forget about the redo stamp :-)

"You have a run-on sentence here, would you like to find it or have me show it to you. If I show it to you, you will get the REDO stamp..." Find it! I'll find it!! Sometimes you were given a choice, and sometimes you were hit with the surprise attack of the REDO stamp. Either way, you learned the complexities of the written word. I will never forget his teachings, especially the way he taught vocabulary. He was one of the best teachers I ever had!

Ed Eivers was an inspired teacher. I still remember WFFs, avoid common gross errors (more often than I would have), and remember the REDO stamp with a mix of wispy nostalgia and trepidation (a word I know how to spell thanks to Mr. Eivers). When I became an ESL teacher in China for advanced students, I actually created a little sign that I hung on my computer, which read, "What would Eivers do?" He taught me how to bring dignity into a classroom by expecting great things of my students. Mr. Eivers made my life better, and I will never forget him.

Everything I know about proper comma usage I learned in Mr. Eivers' class.  And so many of the vocabulary words I see all the time in books I remember memorizing for his quizzes.  His class was where I first really learned how to write and I can still re-read essays from his class and watch how I improved over the year.  A great loss.

Mr. Eivers increased my vocabulary more in one year than all of my other years of education put together!!  I have been inspired to learn new words ever since.  Thank you for all of the "great word, who knows what it means, put in on the board..."

Mr. Eivers gave me confidence, and pride in my work.  Good word, confidence...what does it mean?  I will always love the Redo stamp and will never see a Dixon pencil and not think of him.  A wonderful man!

Mr Eivers was the most difficult and most valuable teacher I had.  I've shared stories of the "REDO" stamp with colleagues and friends.  I'm terribly saddened by your loss.

We butted heads often in class, but I can honestly say you were one of my favorite teachers in high school.  I learned so much in your class.  You ruled with an iron fist, but you had a heart of gold.  I have spoken of you fondly over the years many many times and I still have papers bearing your REDO stamp.  You were a wonderful and caring teacher and will never be forgotten!!!!!!!!!

Ed Eivers was the best teacher I ever had, it's true. I remember the pound of the REDO stamp on my paper and the way he looked at us over the rims of his glasses. I remember the way he let us make mistakes and figure out how to fix them ourselves. When I became a teacher I drew from his model, even had my own REDO stamp made. Now as a teacher educator at Arizona State University I tell my students about Mr. Eivers and the way he made me love the challenge of learning. I was trying to find him when I found his obituary today. I'm sad I didn't get to tell him the impact he had on my life, but I'm glad to share it with the family so they know that his legacy lives on far and wide.

My Children were always in fear of the Redo Stamp. But later on understood the reasons for this action as it has helped in their adult life.  I also enjoyed visiting with Ed as a fellow coach and parent.
