Evelyn Marie Anderson, the 10th child of Freidericke & Oscar Anderson, was born March 26, 1920, on Elwert Rd., Rt4, Sherwood, Oregon. The eight children in the family, 5 boys & 3 girls, (2 other daughters were deceased from pneumonia in infancy) all walked 2 miles each way to Middleton Elementary School. The Y.M.C.A., near 99W, is located adjacent to what had been the original schoolhouse.
After attending Tigard High School for two years, Evelyn finished the last two years at Sherwood High, just opened in 1936, now Sherwood Middle School. She attended Oregon College of Education in Monmouth before teaching elementary students in Talbot, Scholls, Nyssa, Portland, Tigard, and Oregon Episcopal. Evelyn also attended Portland State College and Oregon State College; after marrying Roy Sweet of Missouri who was an active reservist after serving in the Air Force during W.W.II, he also served on flight duty during the Korean War. They settled in Tigard and S.W. Portland with their 3 surviving sons. Eric the oldest son preceded Evelyn’s death by just over two years. David and Ervin, their wives Sheila and Marcia, Eric’s wife Grace and eight grandchildren all live near Portland and Warren, Oregon. Roy preceded Evelyn in death in 1991 at their S.W. Portland home. They had been ”Snow Birds” in Arizona for 8 years after retirement.
In 1993, Ray Kriner and Evelyn Sweet, who met in Arizona, were married and also became traveling “Snow Birds”. Ray passed away in 2005, after a long fight against ill health.
Evelyn was enormously blessed with God’s gift of good health!
Evelyn was a social butterfly and prolific servant. She was always delivering baked goods and flowers to countless friends, relatives, Doctor’s and nurses. She served at nursing homes each month to help celebrate birthdays and wash people’s hair. It was hard to keep up with all her activities: playing tennis each week, bridge club, senior’s group at Sunset Presbyterian, attending 4 different churches: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Sunset Presbyterian, St Luke’s Lutheran Church, Solid Rock Fellowship, usually attending two different ones many a Sunday, involved in her grandchildren’s lives, garden clubs, traveling, and a host of other activities and service.
She fulfilled the two greatest commandments: “Love the LORD your GOD with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. Love your neighbor as yourself, there is no commandment greater then these.” Spoken by Jesus in Mark 12: 30 – 31.
