Meredith Lokelani Crossley was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1931, and enjoyed a happy childhood with her beloved dogs and horses. She graduated from Punahou High School in 1949, later earning a degree in family studies from Mills College in California. She married Jack Young in 1956. In 1966, Meredith, Jack, and their two daughters moved to Oregon. They settled on a gentleman’s farm in Tigard, raising horses, dogs, beef cattle, and chickens. Always an avid traveler, Meredith joined Tigard Travel in 1975, where she worked for the next 27 years. Her job provided lots of opportunity for travel, and Meredith and Jack, in their generosity, took their children and granddaughters to Europe, Hawaii, and on numerous trips around the U.S. and Canada.
Meredith was politically active as a young woman, and continued to serve her community throughout her lifetime. She was a member of the Jr. League in both Honolulu and Portland. Meredith was a devoted mother, and supported both daughters in 4-H, horseback riding lessons and competitions. Wearing a brightly colored muumuu and laughing all the way, Meredith volunteered in their schools, and co-chaired both the Catlin Gabel Rummage Sale and the OES Country Fair in the ‘70s.
Meredith was filled with love and laughter, and had a keen sense of humor. She loved life and all those around her. She will be deeply missed. Meredith is survived by her daughters, Kim Higgins and Judi Schmidt; and granddaughters Stephanie and Diana Higgins and Alexandra and Nicole Schmidt.
There will be a celebration of Meredith’s life for family and friends at the Portland Golf Club on Sunday, May 15th, at 2pm. “Aloha” attire is encouraged. Remembrances may be sent to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Portland, Oregon.
Arrangements under the direction of Young's Funeral Home, Tigard, OR.
