Paul died at age 90 a month before his 91st birthday. He was born in Sterling, CO. to Joseph and Pauline (Appelhans) Schwerdt. He was the oldest of seven children. Paul spent his early years on a farm in Atwood, CO. and graduated from St. Anthony’s High School in Sterling.
The family moved to Portland in 1941. Paul was inducted into the Army, March, 1943. He is a World War II veteran who served in Australia, New Guinea, Netherlands, East Indies and participated in the invasion of Morotai Island. Paul was awarded the Bronze Star for his service to combat troops 33rd Dixie Division and 93rd Infantry Division.
He was released from the Army in 1946 and returned to attend college at the University of Portland receiving his Bachelors of Science degree in 1949.
Paul married the love of his life Pauline Pearson in 1948 and they had two children. Pauline preceded him in death in 2006. They were married for 58 years.
Paul was a salesman for American Brush and Janitorial Supply Company for 35 years. He received a Tribute To Excellence in 1985 from Portland Sales and Marketing Executives Association.
Paul enjoyed golf and was at one time a member of Riverside Country Club.
Paul is survived by daughter Beth Sprouse; son David Schwerdt; grandchildren Brian Sprouse, Allison Shannon(Jason) and Traci Schwerdt; great-grandson Jacob Shannon; Son-in-law Russ Sprouse; family friend Kathi Gehrts; brothers Alvin Schwerdt and Victor Schwerdt; and sister Angeline Sander.
Paul was a wonderful Father and Grandfather and will be sorely missed by his family. Paul will be put to rest with his wife Pauline at Willamette National Cemetery with military honors. There will be a celebration of life at Tualatin Country Club on Sunday, October, 5th at 12:30pm.
