Our first child, Sharon Metsker, was born with Down Syndrome and was cared for at home by her mother, Phyllis, for 54 years. She had many challenges during her first few years, but always met life with a smile.
After finishing Special Ed high school, she got a job at a local hamburger restaurant, and also worked at Taco Bell. She was active for many years in Special Olympics, where she played floor hockey and volley ball. After we moved from California to Oregon, she was involved at Full Life, a Portland workshop. She was featured as a main character in the movie "Doctor Hospital", which was produced by Full Life.
At age 50, she began to have seizures and dementia, and eventually moved to a loving foster home in Forest Grove, where she lived until March 5th, 2021, when she suffered a gran mal seizure followed by aspiration pneumonia and respiratory failure. She fought for life until her death on March 26th, 2021 at age 55. She will be remembered for her smile, and for the joy she brought to not only her family, but to all who knew her. She now has a perfect body and perfect health.
She has joined the angels in Heaven, and her sister, Lisa, who preceded her in 2005. Though we shed tears of sorrow now, we rejoice that we will be able to be together again with her someday soon.
